Scammers have hijacked my web. HELP!

I am new to the bittorrent community, but have benefitted from it greatly. I have gone to some of these sites on your list and they have installed a hijack program that will not allow me to go to any web sites without redirecting to their search engine. I have Spysweeper and have run it a number of times, but it doesn't find this hijacker. Can you help me find a good downloadable program that might stop these guys?

    http://296f8.ilxt.info/index.php?aid=543

(The above link is the enigine I am redirected to. Not only that, but it keeps trying to reset my homepage to http://www.windows....... something that has nothing to do with Windows.

I sure hope you can help me.

While Spybot is great, and it's one of my favorite proggies, I whould rather recommend HijackThis 1.98.2 for handling hijacks. (It's in the name...)

A great idea put forth by tm was to create a hostfile from our list.

A hostfile template and an installer which would either overwrite the current Windows HOSTS file or add to the current list would be REALLY beneficial to people who aren't used to dealing with these types of sites, less experienced people and even total newcomers (and of course people who just don't want these damn rogue sites coming into contact with their browsers).

So look out for P2PForums.ScamBlocker.0.1a.exe real soon! Every scam site under the sun will be listed, including everything here and other rogue domains belonging to the "companies" listed towards the bottom of the guide.

Many thanks go out to tm for this damn excellent suggestion!

I still wonder if we shouldn't add one of the database from one of the ad blocking host files all ready out there to make it even more useful.

Well I don't mind other blocking programs using our list / file / whatever. I'll have a seperate one for just these sites created anyway as some people only want to block certain things (I've seen people get angry with PG/PW blocking something on a webpage). If anyone else wants to combine the list with theirs or add the list to their blocking app they're welcome to. (though a link/mention would be nice in return ), hehe.

Hmm, not exactly sure. I've seen a LOT of these sites thrown about the net though, even in sponsered Google ads. (Google grokster and keep refreshing till you find a few examples down the right-hand side).

I've heard rumours about anti-spyware apps based on Ad-aware's engine which kill certain spyware and actually add their own, which goes undetected. This could be one of them, but like I said I really can't be sure.

Anyone have anymore info on that site?

    21/08:

Added a bunch of Shareaza scam domains:
/http://shareaza.ca/ (FileMiner seem to have registered a lot of .ca domains)

Added some more general scam sites:

    EDIT: And /http://filesharingcentre.com/ (British spelling)

I emailed haxor with the additions, however I told him to credit you, not me on the credits page.

    Thanks MasterChief.

I've now added a paragraph under "Misc. Rogue Sites" about Openwares.org.

Thanks, but I'm sure plenty of other people would have mentioned it before long, especially any K-Lite user. In the days before Kazaa was completely cleaned by hex-editing, the HOSTS file they had up on the K-lite site was needed to block out the residuals.

I'm a big fan of the hosts file approach to ad-blocking. Some of the banner/popup blockers I have tried require being set up as a proxy, so they can conflict if I want to use another app as a proxy, like HTTP Proxy, for instance.

I just downloaded and am trying out several hostsfile managing applications - looking for the best freeware one that has good rightclick functionality for adding sites, banners, and images - as well as a URL search and checking for and removing duplicates and dead sites. And maybe something like virtual folders to organize them (I'm thinking similar to an advanced bookmark manager) I use a Hosts file spliced together from too many sources - and so many lines it would take ages to go through it all. But as an added bonus I also don't get P2P ad banners (sorry, Pablo)

ToM, How do you find all these sites, anyway? just by thinking up variations and misspellings of p2p and other common sites?
