1) Creat new doc. (ctrl+N) Color you want your ball to be.
For this example I used 500 X 500

2) Filter> Distort> Polar Coordinates
Rectangular to polar

3) Using your Eqliptical Tool, Make a circle around area you want to be your ball.
ctrl+C

4) Make new layer. Paste ball.
Delete first layer

5) ctrl+Click on layer
Duplicate the layer

6) in new layer Fill with gradient White to transparent, drawing from top to the middle.

7) Filter>blur>Guasian blur.
Play with the slider until you get something you like.
You can either leave it like it is, or drop the opac to something you like better. Merge Visible.

8)Duplicate layer. Add a drop shadow to top layer. Link and merge visible.

If you are happy with your results, you can stop here. If you want to change the color, go to image>Adjustments>Hue and sat. Move the sliders till you find something you like.
