Chris Columbus was rumoured for "Sub-Mariner" a few months back. According to Variety, it's a done-deal - the "Harry Potter" director will indeed be bringing Namor in from the green seas and into multliplexes.

Universal has hired Columbus to direct and produce a film version of the popular Marvel comic series. David Self is penning the screenplay.

The film, based on a series thats been running since 1939, follows the adventures of Prince Namor, a half man/half amphibian from Atlantis. The troubled sod helps out both those above and under water.

The Rock has been rumoured for the lead role, but his schedule's so darn choca-bloc, I doubt he could fit it in. He's got "Spy Hunter", "Instant Karma", "Doom", "Gridiron Gang" and "Johnny Bravo" to get done before he turns 35. Still, you gotta admit - he's probably the right man for the job. He looks snugger than socks in shoes as Namor, and I believe, could be the only fit for the gig. Dump something DJ - this number's got your initials all over it. However, if Columbus is using the 'recent' "Namor" comics (The New Millennia Issues) as a stencil (see pic on the front page), The Rock's about as appropriate for the part as a turtle is in a Limo. The guy in that comic looks more like a cross between Lori Petty and Orlando Bloom than a muscular action hero.

I doubt they'll go for that version though - they'll stick to the original. Going for the skinny runt version would be like Sony choosing to do "Spider-Ham" or "Spider-Man". The big-time action epic fits in better with what Marvel's Kevin Feige told Wizard magazine last year too. "We just got a script in, and it's pretty epic", says Feige of the project. "We're going to do some minor polishes and then it goes to the studio."

Be interesting to see what Columbus does with it. He's quite a good director - look what he did with "Harry Potter" - but action isn't necessarily his bag. He might be producing the "Fantastic Four" redo, but the closest he's coming to helming something for the big boys troupe is pitting Macaulay Culkin against some sloppy burgulars.
