Well, we all hafta start somewhere. The only stupid question is the one that goes unasked.
If you are only interested in downloading music then the best applications for that, in my opinion, are Piolet (http://www.piolet.com/) and Blubster. (http://www.blubster.com/)
These two programs specialize in nothing but music sharing and both have a very good selection and work well. The main difference would be that Piolet has no spyware, but there is a clean version of Blubbster availabe, you might be able to find a link somewhere around here.
There are many other applications available for sharing music as well as many other types of files, you should nose around the site a bit and see if anything specific interests you. Everybody has their own preferences and don't be afraid to try out as many different programs as you can.

If your just getting started one of the easiest programs to use is Kazaa Lite, it doest have any spy or adware in it. it can be found here www.k-lite.tk.
If your from America though you might want to try something different as the RIAA are cracking down on file sharers, Fasttrack ( which kazaa uses) being one of the main networks their checking.
A good website to find info and guides on different file sharing programs can be found here www.slyck.com
Once you've decided what to use, ask more questions if your stuck I'm sure someone can help.
Best to try a few and see what takes your liking.
What I'm using
K-Lite
Shareaza
BitTorrent++
DC++
Soulseek
WinMX
Ares

Im my humble opinion, any version of KaZaA is not a safe alternative right now, especially for a n00bie. There are many great programs out there for file sharing. Rasta already named 2 of the best, for music only. Other you might want to check out are, in no particular order, WinMX, SoulSeek, Ares, & Shareaza to name a few. Never hesitate to ask any question, as that is why we are here. :)

Just follow the instructions within which ever application you decide to use. They are usually pretty self explanatory. Make sure you only share the particular files/folders of your choosing. Many innocent folks end up sharing folders that they don't mean to, because they are not careful during the set up of the program it's self. That can be dangerous as well as embarrassing. Select only the folders that you want to share. If you have any further trouble, ask away. ;)

Once you have downloaded and installed the program you decide upon. All you have to do is start the program and that will connect you to the network.
Its the program itself which enables you to share your files.
Taking WinMX as an example click on the search tab on the top of the screen, then enter the Artist or song you are after in the search box.
Press the search button and a list of files will appear double click the file you want and it will start downloading.

IMO if your going to mention Kazaa, you might as well include iMesh & Grokster...since all 3 use the FastTrack Network.
I would say go with Ares, it is simple & pretty easy to get used to. I t has come along way since the beginning.

Good point Lion. The only reason I metioned KaZaA is because Serps mentioned it. You are absolutely right though. Fasttrack, using any client, is probably not a good idea right now. That includes any vesion of KaZaA, Grokster or iMesh.
Cyber Son, I mentioned SoulSeek. I didn't post the link though. ;)

Hmm... so, what does everybody think is THE most easy to use non-fasttrack client, which can be used for generally everything?
A sort of first-stop client for newbies, if you will.
My vote is with Shareaza.

Another easy program to use is Ares. Just install and search not to many settings to adjust.
