View Full Version : Is WinMX not usable on a Windows98 system, or is my firewall the problem?

I've tested out just about all the different sorts of P2P networks, and this is the only application that never worked for me. I'm curious as to why. I use Windows98 with ZoneAlarm (yeah I've read critism about ZoneAlarm, but I haven't had the reported problems, and it's very easy and free besides).
WinMX acts really slow. There is a lag from when I click a button to getting an effect. Searches don't give any results, at least not for the few minutes I bothered to wait. It's a real drag and bummer to use.
My system isn't so new, but 733 MHz with 512 MB RAM should be plenty, I would think. What's the problem with WinMX on my system?

hmmmmm not quite sure. From what I read on thier website your machine should run the program fine as you have met all the system requirements.
I too use Zonealarm and have in the past when I ran 98 and never had any problems with WinMX. I really don't think Zonealarm is the problem...the only thing I could possibly think of is maybe your settings? Make sure you are set to make a secondary connection and that your configurations are correct for your internet connection.
Sorry couldn't be much of a help but will *bump* your question so that maybe someone else will see it and can help.

ZoneAlarm and Linksys routers conflict with the WPN connection.
Get rid of ZoneAlarm. It often can't handle the bandwidth usage WinMX causes.
I personally use Sygate Personal Firewall (Free Edition). It's fast, light, effective, low on CPU/MEM and isn't BBB (Bloated Beyond Belief).
When you turn on WinMX, the first screen you see, is the network screen.
Make sure you're on secondary connection. Being a primary (superpeer) on the WPN takes a lot of bandwidth.
Edit: Some minor errors.. :hammered:

Even when using secondary you must set a limit for your upload speed. You need to save about 3/Kbs of your upload stream if your using broadband. This will help your speeds all the way around. Many people don't do this. Its KEY

Oh my, it was as simple as making the setting be secondary connection. I suppose my DSL with slow upload requires that.
Thanks for the tips, and I'll look closer at that Sygate firewall too.
