View Full Version : How to really cool down your computer

This will sound really lame, but I have an oscillating fan pointed at the inside of my computer tower, and it works really good. I got the idea since I have the oscillating fan in my room, going non-stop 24hrs a day (it's really hot where I live) and I was sick of hearing all the noisy little fans inside my case which are louder and more high pitched than the big oscillating fan.
Anyway, I unhooked all the fans except the power supply fan obviously, and pointed the oscillating fan into the tower case. Not only is it less annoying, it really takes the heat off of my stuff. It cools the Celeron down to where the heatsink is cool to touch, the hard drive is only warm now, where before it was hot. And my hotter than nuclear fire TNT2 card is staying fairly cool now too.

then its bad for it, but i guess that doesnt apply if its being cooled!
i have done that once with my laptop, just ran it on the underside of it, worked great to finish rendering this scene i was making

I wouldn't do that too much. The dust that will blow into it will be alot. The result will be the dust acting like a winter jacket and making it run even hotter eventually. Its best to put the back of the fan really close to the case and blow away from it. This will cause the heat to be sucked out. You could always buy a water cooliong system, but they cost alot. There are some noise reduction kits that supposedly help reduce the noise alot. The other option is to get a heatsink that can be controlled by hand or by the computer. So that way you can set the speed of the fan. Also consider makn a baybus (think thats the right name) to set certain fans on and certain fans off. You can find plans to make one on modding sites or just buy one.

Are there any number specs on how cool this will run? Such as it runs at x degrees on y system? From the article it looks like a great product. Just wondering if it's better than my volcano 9 silent. Always looking to kill that jet engine take off sound running 24/7 in my room. :p

i've had that idea before...but never tried it.
another more recent idea i had was this: cut a hole in the bottom of your case, and take off the side...set the case so that the hole is over the air conditioner :)
wouldn't work in the winter though.

You reminded me of a mod some guy did for his computer. He lived somewhere where it was cold all year round. He took a bunch of old plastic coke bottles and cut the tops and bottoms off and glued em together so it was like a tube. Then cut a hole in his wall and put one end of the tube by it and the other end into the back of his computer by a intake fan. Since it was always around like -20 to +40 degrees farenheit outside his computer ran SOOOO cool. Now obviously not even is gunna/can do this, but it makes the idea for the air conditioner seem possible.

yes...but what if you run the United Devices daemon...and your CPU usage is at 100% all the time :)

@cpugenius...lol...well Rain 2.0 will help 96.3% of people cool off their computer's operation.
Especially older machines.
I would question having my cpu operate at 100% all the time.
Daemon is a good diagnostic program, but...the downside of operating the cpu at 100% (shortened life)would outweigh the benefits in my view.
There is also a lot of useful info regarding computer cooling at the website I refered to (above)...peace ...out

@well cpugenius ...SALUTE' ...not everyone is as fortunate as you to be able to cast aside or upgrade our computer equipment as soon as it becomes obselete.
My recommendation was for the rest of us 'mere mortals' who seek to configure and extend the life of our obselete equipment with tweaks like Rain 2.0 ..to wring the most out of what we got ...without spending any more bucks.:D

@hova...lol...:D ....check again...the link(above) is working just fine.
Once there ....scroll down about ½ way down the page to the download link - to get Rain 2.0.
The author asked not to link directly to the downloads.
As I said before there is more interesting info about computer cooling at the site as well.
