Usually those hardcore Modding and Enthusiast Forums are good places to find out what is good and what's not.

I recently built mine. It was easy, if I can do it anyone can (I'm an accident prone idiot so that's really saying a lot.)
Most if not all power cords and ribbon cables anymore are keyed along with the front LED's (which was my big concern) and I booted it up the first time without a hitch. (No fryed wires)
Most motherboards now have nearly everything on-board except video, so you could use any video card compatible with it. You'll need a power supply unit, your CPU and fans (make sure the heatsink grease goes on right), good RAM is important, and all your drives.
The hard part is actually loading the operating system and your drivers.

Mine is on this page somewhere, just don't do all the freaky-weird stuff Rasta did to his and you'll be alright.

Just a side note... When you start to build your own pc here are a couple tips that will make your life a little easier:
1. Don't use magnetic screwdrivers!
2. Invest in a good heat sink material like Arctic Silver Thermal Compound...I personally have excellent results with this but fair warning its a little pricey but well worth it. And a little bit goes a long way!
3. MOTHERBOARDS...make sure its what you want and is not going to cause you upgrade problems in the future! Believe me been there done that and could have kicked my self right in the ass! Asus makes a great board and is usually the board of choice when building your own pc! Just be gentle but firm when you install your RAM..make sure your standoffs are mounted correctly and the board is well supported when you install it. I find that sometimes when installing RAM the board tends to "bend" a little so a tip would be to take a small piece of cardboard and place it under the "bend" area stablizes it so that the RAM can be installed easily and you don't get that hideous "CRACK" and find yourself going off to the store to buy a new board! *L*
4. If your case is aluminum or any other kind of metal and especially if it has a see through side when your finished putting in all your parts bairly wet a cloth with a little rubbing alchol and whip it down (careful not to get it on any of your electical componets) to remove any oils from where your hands have touched the case. This will prevent rust. Most cases now days come with a nice coating on the inside to prevent this but I still whip mine down to be on the safe side and keep it looking clean!
And finally.....DON'T BE SCARED TO GIVE IT A TRY! Everyone needs to build a pc at least once in a lifetime! *L* Its really easy and if you need help or get stuck somewhere just drop in and there are alot of us here more than happy to answer your questions! If and when you do build your own pc be sure to post pics!
Good Luck and hope this helps! ;)
