WASHINGTON -- German chipmaker Infineon (Quote, Chart) has agreed to plead guilty and pay a $160 million fine for participating in what the Department of Justice (DOJ) calls an international price-fixing conspiracy in the memory chip market. The fine is the third largest in U.S. antitrust history.

According to the felony charge filed in the U.S. District Court in San Francisco, Infineon conspired with other, still unnamed, dynamic random access memory manufacturers to fix DRAM prices to major U.S. computer and server companies, including Dell ,Compaq, HP ,Apple ,IBM and Gateway.
Munich-based Infineon issued a statement saying the fine would be paid in equal installments through 2009. "Infineon [has] already been in contact with these customers and has achieved or is in the process of achieving settlements with all of these [customers]," the Infineon statement said.
