Can I split a mpeg file using Virtual Dub???

What i did was....

I selected a particular segment using start slection and end selection and then i tried to save the selection by hitting on save a segmented avi in the file menu...

What happened was it stored only audio data and only first few frames of the video...

And yeah while scanning i used with Shift down to lock on key frames...

Guys can u please help out.. tell me what im doing wrong????
