Help and join UniteTheCows.com UTC team to fight against cancer
Help save lives by doing cancer research! Click here to see the UniteTheCows.com UD member page (http://www.grid.org/services/teams/team.htm?id=80CB6F2B-E6DB-4F99-A07A-F4F74F178AE9) . Please take a few minutes to sign up for our UD cancer research program, it uses idle cpu cycles to help fight cancer by helping to find new drugs.
All they have to do is Download (http://www.grid.org/download/) and install the UD
software and then go to this page to join your team.

Download the UD Agent
United Devices invites you to download our software — a small program called the UD Agent — and become a Member of the United Devices Community. The UD Agent can recycle your PC's unused resources and use them to perform valuable scientific and medical research without disturbing your usual computer use.
Instructions:
1. When the download is complete simply "double-click" on the 'ud_agent_setup.exe' file (in the location where you chose to save it) to begin the installation.
2. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete installation.
3. Following installation a LOGIN window will appear, choose a MEMBER NAME and PASSWORD.
Project Selection: When you install the software and create your user account you will be included in all current United Devices projects by default. If you wish to change your project selections at any time please follow the instructions contained in the Project Selection FAQ.
Please Note: If you have a LAN connection and are behind a firewall, you may need to enter proxy server information. To do this, click the SET PROXY button. (The proxy server settings require a valid IP address and must be input prior to attempting login.)
If you have any difficulty downloading and installing this software, please review the technical FAQ or contact support for assistance.

How it works
If the UD Agent is using my computer's resources, will this affect my regular computer use?
No. Configured correctly, the UD Agent will never interfere with your ability to use your own computer. Most computers never use all of their resources-it is estimated that up to 90% of the processing power of an individual PC goes unused. The United Devices distributed computing model is based on the ability to utilize this "idle" capacity from individual computers.
Do I have to leave my computer on all the time for this to work? Or always be online?
The UD Agent can run only when your computer is on, but it will automatically start when you start your computer. The more your computer is on, the more processing happens, and the more points you get for sweepstakes and other Volunteer Your PC member rewards. The UD Agent doesn't need to be connected to the Internet to work its task, but once finished, it needs to reconnect to return data and to get a new task to work on.
Will running the UD Agent cost me more in electricity?
The amount of electric energy consumed by your computer is in many ways related to how much processing that it is doing at any given time. If it is sitting completely idle, then it uses very little power, while opening several programs causes it to use more power. Since the UD Agent uses the spare resources on your computer, then it will cause the computer to use slightly more in electricity and therefore you may see a slight increase in your electricity costs. Exactly how much this increase will impact you depends on conditions where you live. In most places, the impact will be the equivalent of an additional low watt light bulb. If these costs are a concern, you can limit the operational time for the UD Agent through its device preferences, which are located in your member profile.
What about connection costs?
The UD Agent operates as any other Internet application, and requests an Internet connection from your computer. If using a properly configured dial-up connection, Windows will automatically dial your Internet Service Provider (ISP). When this is completed, the UD Agent will then attempt to contact our servers through the Internet. Therefore, the only costs associated with the connection depend on your service with your ISP. Uploads and downloads do not typically require lengthy connections, however busy periods or maintenance outages may impact your connection.
If connection times are a concern then you can manage the UD Agent by setting Windows to "never dial a connection" unless manually initiated, and/or set the UD Agent to only attempt an Internet connection during certain times of the day through the "device profile" in your Member Profile's Device Manager.
This sounds too good to be true. Am I missing something?
Everything is on the level. This is the ultimate win-win situation. Members of the Volunteer Your PC program contribute computer time that normally would go to waste. Our customers and project partners can access more computing power to advance their projects. United Devices picks up a fee for building and administering the software that does it all, and we all get to feel terrific because we are changing the world.

I've been using it for quite a while now, won't cost you a thing, runs smoothly in the background.
And you get a reward by the feeling you are actually helping out to find a cure for cancer.

I used it for a while.
My CPU is usually around like 2%, 5% at the most. While I was running this in the background it was 100% at all times.
I asked a few people about the wear and tear on my PC and I got a reply from one person of "which one is more important, finding a cure by shaving 2 or 3 years off of the life of your processor, or your processor.
Well my answer is a cure of course, But I can donate what I can money wise through out the year, I can't afford to replace my processor when it dies. So I drop my change ( and I mean all my coins) into a jar and at the end of the month it goes to finding a cure :) which in the long run I am probly paying out more in money than it would cost to replace the processor but hey even better for them:thumbsup:

I have been running UD for awhile, and just joined the UTC team. I have have my main Pc, and and old laptop that crunch 10-14 hours a day each, and my wifes PC runs it when she turns it on.
Let's put our collective cow power together to help.....:type:

A considerable cross section of our members here at UTC have chosen to participate in something known as "Distributed Computing"; to that end we've assembled a primer on how to put your spare computer cycles to use. There are a number of similar but distinct projects users can choose from. This is an introduction to them, and the process of distributed computing.
What is Distributed Computing anyway?
Distributed computing is a very large number of individual computers all working on the same problem. The real beauty of DC is the way it uses your computer, by using only the idle time of your CPU. While you read this, your computer literally just sits and waits, even if you are listening to music, have some different files open, maybe even burning MP3s to CD. Probably 90% of your processing power is idle. If you were participating in a DC project, that largely unused portion of your CPU cycles would be put to excellent use, and you wouldn't even notice it. And yes, your security is assured.

I normally keep my 'puter on anyway...I ran SETI for a while but then decided it was not goin' anywhere. However, I know of lots of folks (including family) who have had and died of Cancer, I decided this WAS worth it...so I run this instead...

BREAKING NEWS: GRID.ORG MISSION COMPLETE
On Friday, April 27, 2007, Grid.org announced it has completed its mission to demonstrate the viability and benefits of large-scale Internet-based grid computing, and will be retiring its famous efforts to support critical health research.
Grid.org was the largest and most ambitious public interest grid venture ever attempted, and thanks to Grid.org and its millions of members, dozens of similar global grid projects have been able to catch on and succeed by following its footsteps.
Thank you to all our members!
The excellent work Grid.org has done, both in contributing massive compute power to critical health research and in establishing this Internet-based model as beneficial, would not have been possible without the faith, efforts, and support of our millions of members worldwide. Thank you so much for your years of ongoing support!
Please support other volunteer grid projects
We encourage member to take your valuable resources to other projects of this kind that are ready and willing to accept you as new members.
