Source: P2PNet (www.p2pnet.net)

p2pnet.net News:- As we reported earlier (http://p2pnet.net/story/2109), there may be concerns about how well, or otherwise, XP SP2 functions alongside p2p applications.

We still haven't heard anything distinctly negative from the p2p ops themselves but, says a Reader's Write here (http://p2pnet.net/index.php?page=comment&story=2109&comment=3961):

"Since some P2P clients such as eDonekey and eMule open connections to every single source of a file that it can find on the network, SP2's imposed limit of 10 per attempt would not cause a problem with dialup users, but could certainly limit high-speed broadband users - who may find themselves choked.

"The eMule and eDonkey forums are posting some solutions to this, and in time better ones are sure to be found.

"Just like ISPs that generally only offer severely asymetrical upload:download ratios, M$ appeared to ignore and neglect the needs of P2P users - after all, we should all know by now that P2P is exclusively the tool of criminals, terrorists, and paedophiles - and something that no upstanding, law-abiding person would ever have a need for."

We'll keep you posted.

Has anyone gotten SP2 final yet and seen how it works with their p2p clients?

so if we are on broadband, running p2p, the the sp2 might not be such a hot idea?

Just to warn you that ed2k link isn't "verified" I got it from another forum board. The other link is a webpage that seems to have some info about the situation.

Does this exploit only effect eMule & eDonkey or all P2P...like BT & Piolet??

I have a question also. I got a little confused by the instructions on that web page. Do you just install the patch after you have installed SP2, or is there any additional tweaking necessary?

I'm honestly not sure. I will not install service pack 2 until its been out there for a bit, its clear what keys are black listed, and a few other things... Im also not sure about what all p2ps this will effect bt, and ed2k for sure since you have so many connections with those programs.

From what I am hearing, there are no blacklisted keys. MS is allowing pirated copies to work with SP2, despite what the initially said.

i have had reports of some people having problems with both the patch, and SP2. Also there is more than one or two filesharing programs affected. For now I would not install SP2. Also some of the keys generated by older key generating programs have had problems.

This file doesn't appear to have any sources.

A copy paste should do the trick, but I have had more reports of problems, as I just finished stating at zeropaid, if many system admins wont install SP2, as they are scared of problems, why should we be the ones to test it?

The longer you wait the more stuff M$ will have fixed and/or be available from other companies. I believe there is already a Norton AV problem that Symantec is releasing a fix for.

I don't think there is anything here that warrents an immediate install. There have already been a lot of reported problems, more to come, I would suspect.

I agree Rasta, and most of what the patch does is something we are teaching people to do anyway. first of all install a firewall. As far as the rest goes, Im very happy with the way xp is running with the patches I have already installed. I have seen too many patches to patch patches to be in a hurry to jump on this one.;)

Hopefully there are no hidden major flaws that this Service Pack fixes like the last one did. Microsoft tried to keep that one a secret, but the boys on Tech TV's The Screen Savers spilled the beans on them. Good ol' Steve Gibson issued a fix for it on his website (www.grc.com) for those that didn't have SP1 installed. Otherwise, I totally agree with ya. I like to get some feedback from trusted sources before I install any service packs. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Of course, since when has Windows not been broken. (lol) ;)

I agree...I don't use IE, I have two firewalls (hardware/software), and I'm not stupid. So...I see no reason to install this patch right now.

Here is a link that I got today from a intra-company e-mail telling us not to install SP2. The link is to a listing on th Microsoft site of programs that don't play nice with SP2.
