View Full Version : What Should My Speed Be

Ok, as I said in a previous thread, my ISP is supposed to increase my DSL speed to 512/256 from 256/256.
Now in the past I've received transfer speeds averaging around 39 Kbps. I always thought that was rather fast for a 256/256 line. However, I could be wrong.
So what speeds should I expect from 512? What's normal for a 512 DSL line?

It sounds like your 256 line was very fast, the most you should of got is 32 kBs. With 512 the max you can get is 64 kBs. Probably looking at 50-60.

let me explain the math behind serps post ( its correct :)
256/256 is in the kbits form. of course, everyone uses the kbytes form (well not really but mostly anyway)
so heres what u do
take ur "speed" (512) and divide by 8 to convert to kBYTES. thats ~65 ish.... then u gotta remove the TCP overhead, so u should max out at around 60
so, for instance, i run at about 210 kbytes download, and 35 upload, so my line is like 2000/256
hope this helps anyway!
