Why Require Registration to View?

Why in the world does UTC require people to register just to view threads? I can totally see having to register to post but to view? Is it just to bump up the number of registered users?

My bad buddy I was viewing the boards not logged in and saw the pad lock on all the topics, and for some reason thought that ment you couldn't view, not that you just couldn't post. Sorry about that, I'm not as fimilar with Vbulletin since I don't much like it.
