View Full Version : Good Reason - Or Privacy Treason?

The U.S. magazine Reason achieved a startling technological advance last month, when it distributed its June issue with a different cover, custom-designed for each of its 40,000 subscribers. It showed a satellite aerial photo of their neighbourhood with their house circled. Below the map was their name in large type followed by the words, 'They Know Where You Are! The unsung benefits of a database nation.'
Inside, the magazine gave a frightening glimpse of the extent to which the internet's prying eyes can reveal many details of what we used to think were our private lives. Readers could find out how many of their neighbours were college educated, and even the percentage of children in their zip code area who were being raised by their grandparents.
Living in a database nation raises innumerable privacy concerns," Editor-in-Chief Nick Gillespie wrote in the June issue of the magazine, which is described as a libertarian publication. "But it also makes life easier and more prosperous. We may have kissed privacy goodbye -- and good riddance, too."
In a later article by Gina Piccalo in the Los Angeles Times, Gillespie said 'The customization of the magazine was a nifty experiment and a great promotional opportunity for everyone involved. A team of a dozen people in six states, from Connecticut to Arkansas to California, spent several months collating data and publishing test copies before realizing the final product. It was a very difficult task of orchestration. None of the main people involved were in the same time zone, much less the same office. The first step was compiling information.'
The magazine showed a street map of the subscriber's neighbourhood with directions to their street, plus information such as their neighbourhood's population, median income, median age, and number of people per household.

Thats waaay over the top. Yeah great, now the companies know all about ppl. But having to put someone like that on a mag cover is disturbing. I dont give a crap for security over freedom. If u want to sacrifice freedom for security, you deserve neither. If im gonna be spied and babysitted by a company or the govt, i either move out of the state or even the country.

ditto I don't care if it's just my age and sex. I don't think it's cool that the govm't or companies can just check up on my without my knowledge. If it is a criminal investigation, then I could understand, but otherwise they need to stay out of everyones business.

:hammered: then you had better start moving outta the country now. Its the U.S. government, its what they do. Its not gonna change. Live with it, or live somewhere else.

In my opinion that is the worst attitude an citizen of the USA can have. I'm not trying to bash you. You have a right to your opinion, but that is not what made our country great. If we keep letting them (government) take away our privacy, then the whole 1984 senario could become a reality. That attitude, in my opinion, is what has screwed our country up as much as it is. You might think everything is still great in this country, and it is a great place to live compared to alot of countries, but it's the people (and I'm not pointing a finger at you) that just go along with what ever the government wants to impose on us that have allowed the government to take away as many freedoms as they have. I don't want to live in a society where I am always being watched by "big brother". I don't want to look over my shoulder and wonder who is keeping tabs on me. That might be alright for some, but not for me.
Its the U.S. government, its what they do.
Thats because we have allowed it to go this far. The government might not work for us, but we still have the power to change what I (and many others) believe has gone very wrong in our country.
I'm not running out yet. I'm gonna stay and fight as long as I think there is still a chance that the USA could be restored back to how our founding fathers had planned it. It's gonna be a tough fight, especially with the kind of attitude shown by Kikyo. I'm sure you are a good person, but I just don't agree with that kind of logic.

If you think this is bad try out this thought . If you use an EZ pass on any toll road you are being tracked and it is public record. Now they are coming out with Global Positioning Systems for cars to aid in navigation (On Star is one). How long do you think it will be before someone has the bright idea to combine the GPS with an engine governor so that speed limits can be controlled from some computer terminal somewhere? And that person would know where your car is 24/7. This info would be public also.

first off, LMFAO....yeah, i know thats a bad attiitude to have..no, i am sure that our fore fathers are rolling in their graves, ok? i am sure that they have been for quite some time... and NO, i dont think this country is "great" , yeah, it could be worse, but i never said it was "great"...
i never said that i wanted to live here and that i thought it was ok to live like this. I made one statement and you get all in a huffy...calm down. i agree with what you're saying, but that doesnt mean i have to type it all out. and, yeah, generally, i am a nice person, but now i know what irks you....lol i just think that it is a sad thing that 9-11 had to happen before everyone got all patriotic again, what happened to being that patriotic before that all happened?! hmm, gee, maybe we ought to just overthrow the whole government, huh? lol if our fore fathers knew that america would turn out like this, they would have stayed in europe...sad truth...
sitting here arguing over it wont do a damn thing!:mad2: and remember.....
HAVE A NICE DAY!!!!!! :angel

I was trying to be as nice as possible, but it does irk me when someone says.." If you don't like it then leave it" I love this country and it pains me to see it going the way it is. Sorry if I came off too hash. No disrespect intended. I am active in my community and state in regards to politics as much as I can. I do respect your right to your own opinion, and was just stating mine, albeit in a rather vigorous manner. Once again sorry if I offended anyone, and especially Kikyo. From now on I'll try and keep my heated discussions over in Zope where "taking it seriously" is whats it's all about.

Well the govt spying on all of us shouldnt go any further. And that "if you dont like it leave", idea pisses the hell out of me. I love the country but i sure as hell wont be babysitted by some paranoid govt. But this ease of peoples information and location has to stop. Because we all know companies abuse this opportunity to know where u eat, work, live, sleep.
