Legislators Attack Violent Video Games, Though Courts Repeatedly Grant Constitutional Protection

NEW YORK (AP) -- The video game industry seems to delight in pushing the envelope -- and the bounds of good taste -- with ever-gorier content. That has put it under renewed attack from legislators and activists who claim some titles must be kept out of kids' hands, though courts have repeatedly granted games First Amendment protections.

The opponents cite new research that they say suggests strong links between violent games and aggressive behavior. They are disturbed by games' cultural ubiquity and the always-improving technology that makes virtual gore more realistic than ever.

"Pediatricians and psychologists have been warning us that violent video games are harmful to children," said Mary Lou Dickerson, a Democratic legislator in Washington state who wrote a law now being challenged in federal court -- banning the sale of some violent games to kids. "I'm optimistic that the courts will heed their warnings."

THIS IS OVER AND DONE WITH! This BS was back in 1997 & 1998. This is an overrated discusion when it comes to video game controversy. If u have kids, always tell em games never are real. If ure a teenager play any game u want. If ure adult you do the same.

You know what they should whine about more? Video game piracy, but i shouldnt say since im being a hypocrite.

Enough is freaking enough!:frown: :mad2:

let's give up grand theft auto. I am glad to do so. that game sucked, alway sucked, and will suck ever more.

but any other game needs to be more like unreal tournament and splinter cell.

While I am at it why don't we all just play the sims and make videogame babies.

Hell yeah gta1 was a load of crap. No2 wasnt bad but gta3 and gta3: vice are here to stay. Yah and UT and SC in one game would be nice too. Reminds me of No One Lives Forever, either run and gun or sneak and snipe.
