Because two boxes under the TV are as good as one, apparently

Sources close to Microsoft's senior Xbox executives have confirmed that the company does not intend to make its next-generation console, which is set to be launched by late 2005, backwards compatible with existing Xbox software.

Speculation about the backwards compatibility functionality has been rife since it emerged that Xbox 2 - codenamed Xenon - will have radically different hardware to the original system, with a non-x86 processor, no hard drive and an ATI, rather than NVIDIA, graphics chipset, all of which would make running Xbox titles on the platform very difficult.

It was widely believed, however, that Microsoft had retained a team of hardware emulation experts to work on the problem - although concerns over the viability of such an endeavour were voiced by some experts, especially regarding the company's ability to emulate the functions of the graphics unit in the Xbox without violating NVIDIA's intellectual property rights.

I think this will have a very negative impact on the XBox 2.Having support for past games has really helped Sony's PS2 out dramatically IMO.I think XBox is way better than the PS2, but the PS2 has a better approach towards releasing it's new consoles as far as support goes.

Yes. It's certainly inferior to the PS2.

I mean, the XBox only has an included network adapter, included hard drive, included 4 player capability, XBox live, Knights of the Old Republic, Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, GOOD versions of GTA3/Vice City and Splinter Cell/SC:Pandora Tomorrow (The graphics aren't even comparable...), not to mention Crimson Skies and Halo.

BlueTailFly has is spot on if the article is accurate.

Fair enough. I will miss the fact that Doom 3 will be unavailable. But that will be saved for my new hot rod PC. :urock:

I was going to get a console too. I dunno guess i didnt give a crap. I like the ps2 cause of its general compatibilty. But i also like the xbox since its easy to mod with. I was gonna try to make them in linux boxes too. But for the xbox...id swap drives. Best to replace than to format.
