'The FastTrack network is at a crossroads as it enters its fourth year of existence. While it has proven to be more resilient than centralized networks such as Napster or SongSpy (remember them?), it appears its leadership as the number one file-sharing network is quickly drawing to an end.
FastTrack's fall from grace appears to be accelerating, according to ITIC. Over the last 30 days, ITIC tracked the populations of FastTrack, eDonkey2000, Overnet, iMesh and Gnutella. While the overall file-sharing population (of the tested applications) only decreased by 3.09%, the population of FastTrack degraded by a whopping 16.47%.
"Within the last 30 days, while the worldwide P2P population decreased of 3.09% and music piracy of 3.81%, The FastTrack P2P platform was abandoned by no less than 16.47% of its active users. According to the figures, Overnet and eDonkey seem to be new favorites while Gnutella and other emerging platforms probably took very few advantages of this new migration."
FastTrack's freefall can be attributed to many issues. First and foremost, it is the number 1 target of the RIAA. Considering its popularity and number mainstream songs, this makes the perfect trap for the music industry. In addition, the users that populate FastTrack are generally less computer literate than those on eDonkey2000. This leads to the use of client versions that have not been frequently updated. Why is that important?'
