View Full Version : Question about P2P and PG

Alright, I have an interesting question to ask.
Let's say the only things I upload and download over P2P networks are freeware, open-source and perfectly legal things like that. Would I then still need to use PeerGuardian, or would I still need it regardless.
All I download anymore is freeware video games, game mods, Linux torrents, hard to find software, or things of that nature, so would I still need PG based on that?

My first answer would be no. Of course, innocent people have been accused by the RIAA too. ;)
P2P Sofware is not in it's self illegal, not yet anyway. There are many legal files of all types which can be shared through P2P. :)

Somethings that were Freeware, maynot be Freeware now.....so without a version number..you might still get caught..than it's your word against theres.

Thanks guys, I just wanted an answer from the experts.
By the way, you know that all-in-one anti-P2P, spyware, government and military blocklist file on Method's page, won't someone think something is seriously up if you use that one? I just use the anti-P2P one myself.

I don't care about the others......who cares about blocking a Webpage...well, I know some do...just not me.

The adware/spyware one is unnecessary, as I use other things for that, but blocking Govt./Milt. sites night not be a bad idea. This is all theory of course. ;)

Got some news on PG2 (Kernel level blocking).
http://methlabs.org/methlabs.htm
Looks like we might be able to offer 0% cpu, 100% accuracy and no reboot or awkward driver install (hopefully!) :)
Looks like it may be GPL'd but I'm yet to confirm it.
Peace!! ;)

Personally I'd say yes to using PeerGuardian. As far as I'm concerned its one of the best, if not the best P2P utility there is.
It takes up very little space and resources and does not conflict with any other apps, (firewalls, ad blockers, etc...), so why not use it. Every little bit of protection helps!
Not only does it block the RIAA, MPA and other media scroundrels, it also blocks, spammers, porn solicitor sites and other adware/spyware solicitors that might try to infiltrate your computer.

One thing I found out about PG.....is start it 1st.
This will usually stop it from jumping to 100% CPU
cause it dosen't have to look up all those IPs that are connected to you.

But PW is closed source.. PG2 will probably be open-source (GPL docs are currently with the source, so I'm assuming that!!).. maybe PW has a less awkward driver now too.. haven't checked on that yet.

The major difference is, PG doesn't take and IT proffesional to set it up and learn to use it properly. I could never get Protowall to work on my system. The guys at Bluetack were very nice and tried their best to help me, but to no avail. PG has always worked for me. ;)
