Earnhardt, Jr. Holds Most Popular Voting Lead
FORT WORTH, Tex—FRIDAY, APRIL 2, 2004—Dale Earnhardt, Jr. has picked up right where he left off—he leads the Grands!® Biscuits NMPA NASCAR Most Popular Driver Award voting after the first seven weeks of nationwide fan participation. Since its mid-February launch, the voting Web site, www.mostpopulardriver.com, has recorded more than 400,000 votes. That total surpasses last season’s seven-week mark by more than 170,000 votes.
Earnhardt, Jr. is the leader over second-place Jeff Gordon and third-place Kevin Harvick. Tony Stewart is fourth, followed by Michael Waltrip, Dale Jarrett, Jimmie Johnson, Mark Martin, Bobby Labonte and Kyle Petty.
"The fans’ enthusiasm for their drivers is remarkable. We saw an amazing 118 votes in the first 18 minutes of online voting,” noted Annie Zipfel, Marketing Manager for Pillsbury® Grands! Biscuits at General Mills. “It’s our role to help bring this award to more and more NASCAR fans, and this strong initial support shows that the fans are certainly excited about their driver becoming the 2004 Most Popular Driver Award winner. Petty, driver of the 45 car, has finished in the top 10 in the past four years of Most Popular Driver fan voting. More than 40 eligible driver names are listed, with bios and team information. At the end of the season, the driver with the most fan votes will be deemed most popular. Since Pillsbury Grands! Biscuits began sponsorship of the award for the 2002 season, fans have cast more than 6.3 million votes in one of NASCAR’s oldest and most coveted awards. The Web site, www.mostpopulardriver.com, is available for Internet voting through 11:59 a.m. CST on Monday, Nov. 22. Additional voting guidelines are accessible on the Web site.
