View Full Version : Sharing Random Files

Ok you may be thinking, huh? I had a thought this morning and I really think it's a good idea.
This is for most p2p programs to actually consider. My thought was this; In the sharing options of the program, you would specify what folder(s) to share. Now after that, in the below options, you could specify how much of the overall content you want to share at one time.
Say you want share your folder D:\Music. And lets say it contains 1600 mp3 files. You could then specify that you want to share 20% of the files in that folder at one time. The program would then only share 'random' files and 20% at a time. That way, you're whole folder isn't really available.
Important:Now lets say you close that p2p program. But then reopen it later. Each session, the p2p program will log what files have been shared before, and pick another random set of 'different' files for that session. This way you are not sharing one file more than another.
Now lets say you don't want to share a percent of the folder. Say you want to share a specified number of files. So you choose the option below the percentage area, and say you want to share 200 random files every session, instead of 20%.
Both options would be implated in the same p2p program. This give the user a choice on what option they want to use.
What do you all think of this idea?

Interesting, but what would be the reason for only sharing a certain amout of your files at one time?

I'm wondering this to, I really can't see any advantage to this, other than it could lighten your upload load

the advantage is it will seem as though you don't have many files to offer. See even though there are options out there to not allow users to browse your files, the RIAA can still scan using different search terms and you will show up if you are sharing that file. So by not sharing all your files at one time, you won't seem to have all that many files.
Remember when the RIAA first announced that they would be gathering information to sue individual users? It was recommened not to share all your files at once. This is the solution of come up with.

Yep, i read in one post that somebody is gettin sued for 5 songs. A good idea would be if the filename could be changed somehow so that the RIAA would not be able to find anything that is copyrighted but this would cause alot of trouble finding the thing you were after and people knowing about it, so its not really a good idea lol. We'll just have to wait for some other way to protect us from them.

Hmmm...good idea! What if someone made it to where a p2p program could mask all the files to say Unknown - Unknown.mp3 and then...! We use hash codes to search and download. This however would require something similar to bittorrent. Sites would have to go up, specificly for this purpose.

Thats the problem to get the hashs out there you would have to set up a site, and that would get you caught. it could really do with some sort of pm network where people only sent out hashs to friends they had known for abit. A program like this would need some way to get them out in the public domain without being accessed by the RIAA etc.
I have no idea of programming yet but i'm still gonna have a think on it, if anybody else has suggestions toward this then please post. It may not result in anything but then again it could go a long way.

I know its possible and readily done with kazaa. I read an article a long time ago on www.fasttrackmovies.com about this. If you rename it to whatever and take all descriptive info off of the file it will still be downloadable due to the sig2dat link. www.fasttrackmovies.com is a great place to get movies and programs, but I've had a hard time getting song download links to actually find sources. A question for anyone who knows the answer. Is the RIAA busting people for downloading files, sharing files, or both?

The RIAA is mainly busting people for sharing. However, they could bust you for downloading a lot of really popular songs. It's morely the sharing they're worried about. They figure, if they can stop people from sharing, then they win.

Thats what i was thinking, a program that would only display the hash or sig2dat link in the program reguardless of how the files is actually named.
