Nvidia has at last formally announced their new GeForce 6800 productline of next-generation graphics cards today. If you've been following the hardware news recently then you'll know that the 6800 series uses the new NV40 GPU. As expected, the 6800 series includes Ultra and "non-Ultra" versions. The former features a 400/1100 MHz core/memory clock plus 16 pixel pipelines, while the latter features 12 pixel pipes and as-of-yet undetermined core/memory clock speeds. Both will feature support for Microsoft's DirectX 9.0 Shader Model 3.0.

"“This is the biggest generation-to-generation performance leap that we have ever seen with a new GPU,” said Jen-Hsun Huang, president and CEO of NVIDIA. “In addition to the raw performance increase, we had two fundamental strategies with the 6800 models. First was to take programmability to the next level with the industry’s only GPU with Shader Model 3.0. Second was to extend the reach of GPUs to the consumer electronics market with a powerful and fully programmable video processor capable of multiple video formats and ‘prosumer’ level image processing.”"

Naturally, the cards themselves are not available just yet. Retail graphics boards based on the NV40 should be hitting store shelves by the middle of next month, according to the press release.
