I am contemplating getting an AMD Athlon XP 3000+ "Barton", 400 FSB, 512K Cache with an ASUS nForce2 Ultra 400 Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket A CPU, Model "A7N8X-E Deluxe" board. Is it better to get a 333mhz board and processor, or am I on the right track? I am not interested in getting a 64 bit chip on a board that will be outdated (discontinued type of socket) in a week. Besides I don't want to spend much over $300 total.

Also, on many websites I've visited, the 333fsb is just as much $ if not more than the 400fsb. And btw, I want pc3200 ram, so I'm just trying to keep everything uniform.

Thanks for the input.

It all sounds good to me. I looked up the motherboard and the FSB speeds that it supports are 400, 333, 266, and 200, so it's backwards compatible.

Also, I believe with an AMD based system, it's better (sometimes required) to use registered DDR-RAM. I have heard Corsair's XMS registered RAM is good.

That is exactly the setup I currently have. I went with the 333 fsb on the RAM amd CPU to save a little money, but went ahead and got the A7N8X-E Deluxe motherboard for a little upgradeability before I go 64 bit. I love the setup. Everything runs sweet as can be. I would personally recommend it to anyone. So My advice is, go for it.
