View Full Version : Favorite P2Ps ~ Past and Present

I was just thinkin about all the different P2P programs I have used, past and present. It's strange how one that used to work great for me and was my workhorse can fall out of favor and be forgotten.

Last night I decided to give AquaLime a go, since Limewire was my P2P of choice for quite a while after the demise of Napster. Unfortunately, I found it to still be full of incomplete files and rather slow. However, I will keep it and try it again, I still have a fondness for it.

I also recently tried Kazaa Lite Ressurection and was equally disappointed. I have been using clean iMesh for accessing the FastTrack network and although it doesn't have all the bells and whistles, it does a better job, IMO. I had forgotten about all the extra added "tools" needed to effectively download with Kazaa. I like the simplicity of iMesh and find that although it doesn't return as many search results as Kazaa, they are nearly all guaranteed to result in a prompt and speedy download.

eMule for some reason quit downloading for me altogether months ago, causing me to switch to Overnet. Overnet gives me the same results that I used to get from eMule, ie, sometimes awesome, oftentimes maddeningly stubborn. I have found that with the unexplained absence of Share Reactor, I use Overnet less and less.

Currently my most used program is BitTorrent. There are many versions out and I use quite a few, but my favorite is Burst! with Azureus a close second. <plug>see our downloads section</plug> I find mostly what I am interested in these days is TV shows and this program more or less specializes in them. There are a number of good forums dedicated to posting .torrents. Currently my favorite site is Hawkie's World. (http://67.18.8.100/index.php?s=) They just moved the site and have a pretty nice setup now. The selection has always been good, the people friendly and helpful and as an added bonus, you are likely to find a few of us cows over there from time to time. Of course anyone familiar with BT knows about SuprNova. (http://www.suprnova.org/) It's been slow and difficult to load sumtimes lately, but usually has a lot of good stuff available.

I haven't used WinMX in ages, but am gonna give it another go again soon as I have always been impressed with the selection there. I also quite like Ares, when I can find what I want. Unfortunately the selection can be rather sparse at times.

What are you guys using? Any fond memories of programs past? I still miss the old, original Napster. Man, how much fun was that................

yeah i miss napster although when i used it i didnt had broadband so downloading a song was like 20-30 minutes, but damn it i love it.......i also miss the original blubster but today i download the latest one and its ok after i run adaware and spybot to get rid of the spyware that it has, i will use it till the new piolet hit the net......

currently i'm using just Bittorrent, the Shadows version and now i'm using Bittornado, besides that; Blubster and Ares that i have found to be quiet good at least for now......i have use edonkey, emule, overnet but all this clients get me piss off i have a file with 99.7% download it in less than 24hours but then stops and after 5 months yes 5 frikkin months never complete so this was the end to the donkey, mule network.........shareaza is the other one that i have used but latest builds didnt do it for me...........

I remember Napster when it first arrived on the P2P scene. Now Napster is alive but not the same as before. Napster charges $0.99 per song or $9.95 per month. The per month susciption isn't too bad a trade off cause you can download as many songs as you like and that is legal. But iTunes is a betta performer.

Also I remember Audio Galaxy (AG) Satellite, Scour Exchange, and Cute MX. Also Freenet has come a pretty long way also. For now I stick with K-Lite for music of different genres.

That's Just Me. Hehehe

My all time fav? Tough call.

Napster has the nostalgia factor... Shareaza has the 'doesn't suck in the billion unforgivable ways that Napster would now' factor in its favor.

Uh. On second thought, 'Raza.

Second place: eMule. Third: Overnet.

Yea, Thinking back to the begining of when I started to become a p2p'er.

The first program I ever used would probably be Kazaa(the regular) which I though was soooo great.

Then the move to Kazaa lite which again amazed me.

The Move to WinMX soon followed which I did enjoy more then any other at the time so dropped all fastrack. Tried Imesh wasnt impressed...same with grokster.

eMule soon followed as my next choice but Q's were just too large for smaller files.

I did give BT a chance but I had trouble finding simple music files but movies I must say it does work great for.

At last I have arrived at my current favorite which is Limewire, I've loved using it for a few years and it has grown SO much.

heh, theres my story, its intersting to see how things come to be.

I started poking around with other clients before Napster had it's last breath. I tried iMesh first, then found out it had spyware (Cydoor) well, I learned about that problem early and fortunately the person who pointed that out also gave me an alternative, kazaa. It was possible to go to their site online and do searchs, like Google. You could then just click the link and download. I liked it so I installed the "Kazaa Desktop Client". Used it till they made everybody upgrade to the new version which contained, spyware. I switched to Grokster, which I used for quite a while. I also used LimeWire at this time which worked great for a while but I lost touch with it.

Like I said, it's funny how this all evolved. I really dislike kazaa now and don't even know if Grokster is still around...................

My Favorite use to be AudioGalaxy. I got over 75% of my 35 gigs from AG. Nowadays, I use, K++, ABC, eMule, WinMX, and a couple others. I also liked Napster in it's glory days.

Bearhsare all the way, I have never heard of half of these clintes, where can I get bittorent and those others........anyway right now, I am using Bearshare to the fullest, even on a dial-up connection!
I have found EVERY single song I have EVER searched for opn there. You all should try Berahsrae, it's a nice program, though it does take up memory when you run it, well for me I only have 64 MB.

I loved Napster and after it went down moved to winmx. That was cool till that thing went south with the million man queue problem. Currenty like DC++ (or bcdc++) and BT (using ABC right now).
