With all the talk about the music industry hiring tech nerds to find people who seek to swap music. What is the best alternative for p2p music swapping?

I am not excited about downloading Kazaa due to the ads. Kazaa lite seems to be impossible to find without going through a bunch of stupid sites that sell you stuff that you don't want.

Please leave a link if possible.

Thank you!

To start of with let me say that no one way is 100% safe. I also recommend the use of fire walls and other shielding programs like PeerGuardian (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/tim.leonard1/methlabs.htm). Then to filter out those pesky corrupt files you can use MP3Shield (http://www.mp3shield.com/)
On to P2P apps Ares (http://www.aresgalaxy.org/) is a top choice of many here. If your familiar with BitTorrent I like Burst (http://krypt.dyndns.org:81/torrent/index.phtml)
The following is a new one I have just started playing with and looks promising Kdrive (http://www.kdrive.com/download.html)

If you like listening to radio on the net you can record the stream with RipCast (http://www.unitethecows.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2687&highlight=ripcast). This is one of the safest ways to get MP3's. However you can't do a search.

I forgot to mention Soulseek (http://www.slsknet.org/)
You can find other ones in our download section located on the Home page.

There is a FTP server started up not long ago so its still not brilliant, but as most attention is being paid to Peer - To - Peer sharing this is quite a safe alternative, but NOT 100%. This site can be found ]Here (http://www.xftpx.com/) You will need FTP software I recommend WS FTP PRO. Personally im still with P2P as this site isnt fully functional. Try using "Peer Guardian" it gives Xtra protection but not full it can be found Here (http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/14/3/14-3-55.shtml)

Piolet and Blubster are pretty good for music. But as stated there is no totally safe way to currently share music, although these two programs supposedly have a fairly secure protocal. I would still use PeerGuardian, at least to help monitor unfriendly activity on your downloads. If I see a bunch of hostile IPs pop up during a download, I drop it like a ton of bricks.

You can find these two programs in our download section. It is worth noting that there is a "clean" (no spyware or adware) version of Blubster around. You can find that with just a little digging around. (it's by Dr. Damn, if I'm not mistaken)

for mp3 the progies already noted, sorry but I don't use peerguardian since most of the stuff I get is from Bit Torrent.... Azureus with the safepeer plugin!
there is DC++ and usenet
The safest way is to borrow from your friends and make a copy, unless they are "watching" you! to be safe do no connect to the internet!!

Shareaza is also great... you may wanna try that out aswell ...

www.shareaza.com

You may also search for Kazaa Lite via Shareaza if you are unable to find it... or just download Kazaa & use Dietk with it! www.dietk.com it will surely remove all the crappy stuff! :)

At school we set up our own DC++ hub. With intranet speeds of over 500kb/s movies get swapped. We only have about 50 people on the hub at anyone time, but we have much more than 1 terabyte of shared data.

DC++ is something I wanna try. I have access to a pretty good hub and may give it a go. How do you like it Fisty?

you have your choice of clients for DC,, they also come with differant lists of hubs and differant rules, do some reading cause some of them will ban you for not reading the rules or have enough to share...
some private hubs are hard to get into cause you have to know the addy and most time have to be registered before hand good luck with your searchs

This is what I always found so intimidating about DC. Man, I'm always a good boy, why would I get banned, haha. I also think that some of the share requirements border on the absurd. But I do have a friendly hub that I can start with if I want so that might make the learning curve a little easier to master.

The thing is that I have always been able to get what I want from the usual clients, so DC always seemed a little too much trouble. But life is to be lived and variety makes things innerestin so................

Ive been with blubster since the creation of water, so i feel really safe with it. got a firewall...can't complain really. me thinks the riaa will give up. imho they're not making the dent that they'd hoped to make
(a sigh and a tear..ain't it pitiful)we said sheepishly.

So has anyone checked out http://freenet.sourceforge.net/ ? I just read an article about it and Dl'd the client but haven't gone much further than that. I don't know anybody that uses it and there wasn't much to see at first, the website tells you it takes time, but I just took a quick look, and I stopped the client.

Anybody use it? Heard about it? Anything?

Have tried it few times, Freenet that is. At the moment I don't need it as the stuff I'm after can easily be found elsewhere, but it certainly offers good alternative in case all major p2p networks become under attack by media industry. You need to keep it up-n-running for a couple of days before it really starts to kick in.
