LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- "Batman Begins" has begun.

A new movie about the origins of the Caped Crusader started filming Thursday in Iceland, with "American Psycho" actor Christian Bale starring as the shadowy vigilante who protects Gotham City from psychotic villains.

Filming will then move to London and Chicago.

The movie is directed by "Memento" filmmaker Christopher Nolan, and co-stars Michael Caine as Bruce Wayne's trusted butler, Alfred. Gary Oldman will play Lt. James Gordon, a younger version of the character most "Batman" fans know as Commissioner Gordon.

The cast also includes Katie Holmes as one of Wayne's childhood friends, Liam Neeson as Batman's mentor, Morgan Freeman as a disgruntled employee of Wayne Enterprises and "The Last Samurai" Oscar nominee Ken Watanabe as the sinister Ra's Al Ghul.

Warner Bros. is hoping to resurrect the character after 1997's "Batman & Robin" with George Clooney, which alienated many fans with its overly campy feel. The studio is a division of Time Warner, as is CNN.

"Batman Begins" is set for release in summer 2005.

Thanks to tadzilla for the heads up. ;)

Hoover! Long time buddy! I haven't had any good arguments since you were here before. (lol) Just kidding bud. Good to see you back around. :)

I would try out, but I fear that their Bat Suit would not fit me. ACME Tent and Awning stopped making Bat Suits years ago. :D

So how did they write Robin out of this one? Not to mention Batgirl.

It takes place years before either of them came into the picture. This setting will be in the first year or so that Bruce Wayne became Batman. It will be based around the comic series "Year One" which is about Batman's early days. ;)

PLOT SUMMARY

Source: IMDB.com (http://www.imdb.com)

A new restart of the "Batman" franchise under the helm of "Memento" Director Chris Nolan and more in tone with the early "Batman: Year One" style comics. As a boy a young Bruce Wayne watched in horror as his millionaire parents were slain in front of his eyes, a trauma which led him to become obsessed with revenge but his chance is cruelly taken away from him by fate. After disappearing to the East where he seeks counsel with the dangerous but honorable ninja cult leader known as Ra's Al-Ghul, he returns to his now decaying Gotham City overrun by organised crime and dangerous individuals manipulating the system whilst the company he inherited is slowly being pulled out from under him. The discovery of a cave under his mansion, and a prototype armoured suit leads him to take on a new persona, one which will strike fear into the hearts of men who do wrong - he becomes, Batman. In the new guise, and with the help of rising cop Jim Gordon, Batman sets out to take down the various nefarious schemes in motion by individuals such as mafia don Falcone, the twisted doctor/drug dealer Jonathan 'The Scarecrow' Crane, and a mysterious third party that is quite familiar with Wayne and waiting to strike when the time is right.

Nicole Kidman was nice, but so were Kim Basinger, Michelle Pfeifer, Drew Barrymore, Elle McPherson etc. Besides, it's not about the babes, it's about the guy in the cape and cowl. ;)

I hope they don't try to use too many villians again, it is totally unnecessary and dilutes the story. :(

Not to mention they take away to much screen time from the caped one.
