There is an old computing addage that goes somewhat like this:

You can NEVER have a fast enough processor...
You can NEVER have a enough memory...
You can NEVER have a big enough hard drive...
If one is good, two is even better...

In short...get the most you can afford (and stretch your budget to get even bigger)...

what do you want upgrade? add on? external?
if you want an upgrade your main
"keep it small if its your main ive been told"

i keep my program files on a 20g
as far as an add on, my second drive is for storage whatever you can afford is the rule
now when it comes to external i just bought an acomdata 120 for about 200 bucks
storage
also ive been running mostly western digitals
ive heard good and bad about all the different brands mostly customer relations

Well. It's all up to you what you want... I've got an 80 and 60 GB Western Digital "in" my computer. I also have a 30 GB portable laptop HD 80, 120 and last but not least a 160GB protable (full size HD) Oh yeah.. The wife also has an 80 GB in her computer that I use as well.. :)

Funny thing is that the more space I have the faster I fill it up.. Out of the 610 GB I have at my disposal I think I have about 60 GB free on all of them combined...

I need to get one of the new 250 GB's that are out... Running out of room.

But back to the original question.. For me I always choose Western Digital (personnal preference) because I have had two IBM drives burn up on me. Since then I've always stuck with Western Digital.. I have heard from plenty of people that Maxtor isn't bad either...

I have a Maxtor and I like it, Seagate is good too, but I think they're more expensive. Whatever you get, just get one with an 8 megabyte buffer, they're faster.

I agree with every one here, and that get the most you can afford with an 8mb cache and 7200 rpm.

As far as brands, I have owned both maxtor and western digital and been very happy with both.

Western Digital is a Good Brand to go with.

I have several WD hard drives and still working condition.
Maxtor makes good drives as well.

Shew. I just finished installing a new 120 gig Maxtor. Cost me $60 after rebates. I had to juggle 5 partitions on 3 drives, 4 including the new one. I moved, deleted, formatted, resized & ghosted my ass off today............

I have both WD and Maxtor. I prefer the Maxtor slightly, they are built just a little better. But I couldn't tell any difference performance wise.
