GALESBURG - The Galesburg Police Department is warning people about fraudulent e-mails sent to bank customers.
The e-mail appears to come from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. It informs recipients that deposit insurance on their bank accounts has been suspended because of suspected violations of the USA Patriot Act.
Galesburg resident David Lawrence said the e-mail was quite convincing, "the best one I've seen yet. ... It's really worded great, it just scares you to death."
A call to his bank confirmed his suspicions, and he called The Register-Mail to make sure the word got out.
The e-mail says Department of Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge has directed the FDIC to suspend the deposit insurance on the account until the individual verifies identity and account information.
The recipient is asked to go to a Web site and provide the information. The Web page asks for personal information and should not be accessed.
