Hi all
ive just bought a new DVD-Rewriter and tried to install it as secondry master, when i plugged it in and started up it wouldnt boot because it didnt detect the hard drive so it asked me to insert a boot disk to start up. if i unplug the DVD-Rewriter and boot up it starts normally and loads windows. how can i get it to work so that it detects my hard drive and DVD-Rewriter and boots from the HD ?
hope i was clear enough
(i didnt know what forum to post this in so if its in the wrong one you can move it :) )
thanks :)

Try switching the jumpers on for the DVD to slave. I don't think you can have 2 masters if they are on the same ide cable.

thanks for the replys :)
sorry i should of been more clear
i have a HD on primary master and a CD-Rom drive on primary slave
(both on the same cable)
when i try to fit my DVD writer to secondry master or secondry slave
(seperate cable)
my computer wont boot up, like it wont detect the hard drive

stab in the dark - try installing your dvd drive where you cd drive is and the cd drive where your putting you dvd drive. see if that works. if not giimmie a shout and ill see if i can think of owt else :)

not all so sure about that bro.
i have done the same as you and have managed to get mine to work.i have had 2 hdd on one ide and a cdrom and a dvd rom on the secondary channel. its all int the jumpers and the bios . when you put the dvd its going to try to be the master. what ever is at the rear of the cable is going to take master and the mid conection is going to be slave make sure you set the middle device to slave on the jumpers or cable select.
now that you have the jumpers set and the ide cables the way you want em you need to go into the bios and set the boot seq. her its listed under hdd 0 hdd 1 stuff like that try setting it to 1 if its on 0 or 0 ifits on 1 i have had to fight this befor you must take the time to get the crap right..

that rule about the cabling only works if you have the jumpers set to cable select, and then that only works if the bios supports it. - did it with my 6 Hdd`s (on the server at work) took a while to figure that one out
also try a bios flash - could just be that your bios is a little old.

c0lin, what OS ya runnin?
It can get pretty sticky tryin to sort out the order of IDEs. As a general rule the HDD(s) would go on the primary ide from the motherboard. If you have 1 HDD, put the CD rom drive on the slave position to that. The DVD most likely should be the master on the secondary connection. If you have an older system and OS, the DVD may well not be compatible without a seperate controller card.
Give us some more info so others can learn from this. :D
OH, don't flash yer bios unless it is absolutely necessary. Things can go wrong and totally shank yer machine.......

If ya flash yer bios, be very, very careful. There is no going back from a bad bios flash. It usually goes well, but in the event of a glitch, you are not gonna be a happy camper.............

Something else you gotta be careful of...some burners REQUIRE that they be set as the secondary master...I know...I bought one and did not know it had to be that way until afterwards and read the instructions.
I won't mention the brand name but the initials are Memorex.

*FYI if your interested - you can buy bios backup devices - just incase it all goes a little screwy you can easily and quickly flash it back with no mess*
:)
