Well, here it is again, the question is self explanatory.

Although many of us have already answered this question , I guess we can do it again for the "new" UTC. ( I for one would really like to know the origin of Unite the Cows)

Ennyway, mine comes from the fact that I have had my hair in dreadlocks for about 17 -18 years and counting. That is the "rasta" part. The "gard" comes from my occupation as a professional gardener.

Roadblock
07-13-2003, 12:18 PM
Back in the good old days of pre December 1998 when I could still work, (RB sighs) Me and some of the guys I worked with in the office were big WWF/WCW fans. We each gave each other names of wrestlers. Roadblock was this big ugly wrestler at WCW, and I guess it was a natural fit. :D Anytime I see some of those guys, they still call me Roadblock as well as everybody on the net now.

Oh, and I forgot. Unite told me once that the origin of Unite The Cows was pretty simple. He heard it once and thought it would be a cool name for a website. He had decided by then to start his own website, and P2P seemed to be a popular topic, as early as Nov-Dec of 2001. As soon as it became available, he grabbed it for his new website, and the rest as they say is history. Maybe he can elaborate if he sees this thread. ;)

Well, I needed an alias. And I didn't want to use my normal one for P2P. At the time I was very into hiphop, my favourite rapper was (and still is) Nas. IMO, Nas ruled! I think you can guess from there ;)

rastagard: I'm getting dreadlocks a week tomorrow, I'm 15. Any suggestions/advice/comments? I've had an Afro for the past 6 months as my hair is REALLY curly and I was going for the rock-star look. So I'm now past caring what people think of my hair!

I'm not sure how you "get" dreadlocks these days. ( I just let mine grow out naturally, took about a year for all my hair to "lock") The only thing I really did to encourage the process along was going to bed with wet hair. I could always count on waking up with a coupla new dreads in the morning. LOL

I know they have all kinds of products on the market for dreads now, never used any so I couldn't recommend anything. Here's a site (http://www.hairpolice.com/) that has a lot of dread stuff, but again I can't tell ya if any of it is any good or not.

I wash my hair with Johnson's Baby Shampoo 5 times a week and use Neutrogena shampoo twice a week.

That's all. No fuss, no muss.

@ Fister, come on now. This time try to make up a better story than ya gave us last time. I mean we all know what yer nick really means...........................

I know a guy who's had dreads all his life, he's reccomended someone to do them for me. I think they use some process of "backcombing", whatever that is.

I know some people swear by beeswax, and I know it's not petroleum-based wax (obviously), but I've had my fill of hair products to be honest.

Might have to get some extensions so they don't end up being 3 inches long and sticking straight out from my head :D

My nick goes back to grade 8. We had just started learning about greek/roman mythology, and my circle of friends and I really took to it. So one day, at lunch, we all deemed ourselves to be the goddess of something, and seeing it was lunch, it all ended up being food related. I was the goddess of Skittles, aka Skittilia. I remembered this lil story, thought it'd make a cute name, and here I am!

You guys all have such original names :) I first heard my name from an anathema song. By defenition it is "A reminder of human failures and that we all must die some day" It was also a form of portrait in the late middle ages of dead loved ones, thus for the relation was formed. A little dreary yes but ive always enjoyed the darker side of things :)

well, considering I'm a genuis, it's rather self explanatory.
but seriously, I was on lycos one day, trying to get into a chat room. This was my first time into a chat room. I found out that a screen name was required so I went to the 'create' page and tried all sorts of things, all of which were taken. then I tried Imagenyuss. I had just tried Imagenuis, but it was taken. I spelt it incorrectly because I thought it'd be kinda funny if I said I was a genuis but couldn't even spell it. I'm a poor speller, btw.

well, that's that.

My sordid, misspent and barely remembered youth is where this particular handle originated. It's a shortened, sterilized, version of the original. Some bar buddies decided that this would be an appropropriate moniker after they realized that at two o'clock in the morning I wasn't concerned with quality but quantity.( I know a lot of you can probably relate.. Male and Female). My apologies to those I've offended and those I will offend. The full version is The dirty f******sailor. Well, the first screenname I created was about 8 years ago...(man, I'm old!) It was for e-mail, but I couldn't just use my own name because it was taken... This was the suggestion that the website prescribed for me. I took it, and it's been my screenname on every other website on which I have registered.

Not really an interesting story, but no one said that they had to be.

At school (and university for that matter) I was universially known as Kipper. For some reason everyone I know in the medical department started calling me Meeester Keep (in a cod Spanish accent). When on the internet there seemed to be a stunning amount of Kippers so I changed it to MrKip.

Coda:
Buckfast is the one alcoholic drink in the world I couldn't finish. It is truely rank. I heard somewhere though that you're supposed to add it to wine to enhance flavour? I could just be talking rubbish.

Lord_of_the_Dense
03-12-2004, 01:41 PM
Mine originates from the Lord of the Dance. No, I do not like the show, quite the opposite, hence the parody. As I join forums and find these "Why'd you call yourself that?" threads, I get more insight about my choice.

This is from a PM I sent:

I believe in all honesty I chose an appropriate name for myself the longer I keep it. I find it accurate for me as it is humbing that I truly do not know everything that I speak of. It also shows my sarcastic side due to the play on words. Finally, it kinda does represent a self-proclaimed lordship over the knowledge or personality I display. It's growing on me, but I will never get to the point of letting it make me arrogant.

mathmission
03-17-2004, 11:24 PM
I guess that I too will tell of my name. It actually has some deaper meaning. Many years ago, a friend and I were sitting in class together, just talking of life, and love, and yadda yadda. The teacher started talking about math (it was math class) and so we couldn't talk much. So, what we decided to do, as many kids at that age did, was to get a notebook, and write little notes back to one another. However, these were not simple little notes. For our age, we were quite serious children.

These notebooks became the Mathmissions, as we were in Math class when they were created. As each year came and went, we continued the tradition of having them, and for 8 years they existed all the way up until the end of Highschool.

The reason that I use the name is because of how I look at those books. They are a living text of my life throughout 8 years of my life. Any thought, concern, comment, anything I wanted to talk about, was in those books. I use the name because it is symbolic of my past, yet the name makes no reference to how I am now. Weird, huh?

Um. I thought I posted in this thread already, but apparently not!

I got my nick from being completely sans creativity in the name departement (Or at least I was seriously blanking at the time...), so I stole^B^B^B^B^Bborrowed it from the Super Mario Brother baddie of the same name.

End of story.

I got mine from a slow evolution of old AOL screen names... ah back in the day when I actually thought AOL was cool. It started as CyberCat009, then CyberTiger009, then XyberTiger (I still used this one he he), Then one day I had to create a fake company name for school. Xyber Company. We (the company) decided to call it Xy. Co. for short. I sort of just kept it for my own nick. I do hope I don't have to spell out what it says for you all. XYC0

When i was young(13), I had a operation and was dead for a while. I had a sort of vision then ,that really stayed with me. In the vision I was a small boy standing on a ridge overlooking a beautiful valley. I felt very scared , I turned around and a big bear was in my path. Terrorfid the bear and I merged together.
I know this sounds wierd , but its what I felt. After I was the bear and I felt strong and peaceful. In the vision my name was Talowa it means Calm water in Cherokee. To me its my spirit.
Peace

That is an awesome story. Are you still afraid now of such things now? Or has the bear given you strength? Just curious as I was flatlined 2x, once that I actually remember stuff, and I have no fear of death now.

Hmmmmm, seems like I've done this once before. Okay, sepia is short for my msn and yahoo nic. I was new to using computers and setting up an email account. I was, at first, dumb enough to do my name and zip code. I cancelled that one and went for a different name. I couldn't get the ones I was thinking of, so I happened to look across the room and noticed the picture I was working on at the time--it was stippling on top of an india ink wash, but I was using the color sepia, not black.
I have about 4 other nics I use on yahoo from the time I used to go to chat rooms, but don't use them in too many of the forums. I prefer to just go ahead and let everyone know it's me when I go somewhere.

So, Sepia is just short for my email and messaging nic. Also, it's the color of my skin during the summer--I get extremely dark because of my heritage And, because of its use, I now get called that by a lot of people I know.

***By the way, I agree on the comments about Lennon--check my sig......

pegasus
06-09-2005, 07:23 AM
When the Gorgon Medusa was decapitated by the hero Perseus, Pegasus and his brother, Chrysoar, were born from the mix of seafoam and blood. Ridden by Perseus, he carried the hero over the sea and aided in the defeat of Cetus, the Sea-dragon, and the rescue of the Princess Andromeda.

After this adventure, the young colt was gathered by Athena (Minerva) and carried to Mt. Helicon where she entrusted the Muses with his care. In his excitement young Pegasus struck the ground with his hooves and cause the springs of Aganippe and Hippocrene to gush forth their bounty of inspiration. Urania, the Muse of Astronomy and Universal Love (also an aspect of Aphrodite) showed the most interest in his rearing. Prophesying of his future heroic deeds and eventual celestial honor she grieved the most when Bellerophon, at Athena's beckoning, came to take Pegasus away from Mt. Helicon.

After the many long years of heroic deeds Pegasus had accomplished in the companionship of Bellerophon, and the hero's thankless death, Urania was enraptured by Pegasus' triumphant arrival to Mt. Olympus.

(The tragic ending of the tale of Bellerophon would seem to be a shrewd illustration of the folly of assuming that something or someone is subject to our will and cannot function successfully without us. The Greeks may have also attempted to tell us that simply being a member of the human race does not, in itself, warrant our acceptance into the transcendental realms. The simple fact that it was the Horse and not the Man must surely convey something of the status of man in the universal scheme of things.)

(The Pegasus Syndrome, as exemplified in the legends of Perseus and Bellerophon, is concerned with the innate ability possessed by some people to negotiate difficulties by rising above them, on the one hand, and the danger of overreaching themselves, on the other. Pegasus, by birth, is the child of Medusa and Neptune, symbols of 'wisdom' and 'emotion,' respectively, which shows the dichotomy of his nature. As in the story, Bellerophon attempted to fly to Olympus (overreach his potential). He believed that Pegasus was subject to his will. However, it was Pegasus who made it to Olympus, while Bellerophon was tossed back to earth, lame and reproached by others. It is unwise to take any situation for granted as the 'lesser' person (or, in this case, beast) may be the very one to teach us the much-needed lesson in humility. Pegasus is also indicative of a specific mission in life which the inquirer will always find the time and energy to pursue, although the path may be sewn with difficulties (the Chimaera) and limitations (Bellerophon's doubt or arrogance). So, the Pegasus Syndrome is the seeming ability to "fly over any situation," though the reverse may be a lesson in humility, being "taken down a peg," as it were.)

Pegasus went on to become the occasional mount of the goddess Eos (Aurora) on her mission to bring forth the Dawn. At other times he was ridden by Apollo (Phoebus) as he brought the sun across the sky. And, even more importantly, Pegasus served as Zeus' Lightning Bearer, when Pegasus' own hooves could be heard thundering across the skies in a storm.

As a tribute to his exceptional life and heroic deeds, Zeus honored Pegasus with a constellation in the sky. According to an amalgam of several other myths stemming from Cheiron's progeny, there is a formidable afterlife for Pegasus involving a wife, Euippe (or Ocyrrhoe), and two children, Celeris and Melanippe. In poetry, the phrase "My Pegasus will not go this morning" means the author's brain will not work (lacks inspiration), and "I am mounting my Pegasus" means he's going to write (he's becoming inspired), and "I am on my Pegasus" means he's engaged in writing.

Ancient astrologers believed that all the stars of Pegasus protected horsemen in battle. In the so-called Lost Zodiac, those persons born between March 13 and April 1 are said to be born under the sign of Pegasus. Because of horseshoes the hoof-marks which horses leave behind look like crescent moons, horses in Greece were sacred to the Moon, which, as it lights up the darkness of the night, governs the world of imagination, instinct and intuition to which the horse also belongs. The moon was also thought to be the source of all moisture, and it was believed to be the moon-shaped hooves of Pegasus, that, when they struck the flowering earth, had caused the Muses' fountain of poetic inspiration to start flowing. The moonlit realm of the imagination, of visions, dreams and intuition, is where those born under the sign of the winged stallion, Pegasus, feel most confident and at home.

Horses are a potent symbol from almost every world religion and mythology. Many of its myths express the horse's innate clairvoyance and ability to perceive the magic within humans. Some view the horse as the symbol of strength, virility and lust. According to popular belief it loses its sexual powers when its mane is cut, and is the only animal which shows sorrow because it weeps for its dead master (though this is later belief is not exclusive to the Horse-Human relationship). Also, it is a symbol for loyalty and devotion, such as the faith it has with it's master. It also represents the warrior spirit, bravery and courage.

Wings are a symbol that denotes "flight" and often represent prayer and contemplation, especially in the sense of feathered bird-like wings. A spiritual or religious symbol they represent the soul's ability to transcend the weight of earthly burdens and rise above such concerns into the air, even to Heaven itself, to the presence of God. In Christian symbolism, through demonization, there are also the accursed wings of such infernal creatures as vampires, basilisks, dragons and others. These are the leathery wings of skin, like those of a bat, whose appearance adds to the attributes of evil inherent in the beast. "Skin" being a symbol of the carnal nature of man, therefore sinful, is connected to the to the idea of the perversion of the intellectual faculties toward evil purposes. Azrael, the Angel of Death, is often depicted with leathery wings, (i.e., the satyr-like devil, Satan [the former Angel of Light, Lucifer] the Destroyer). These are the typical wings of the Hellhorse or the Chimaera.

TheWinged Horse or Pegasus symbolizes heightened power of the natural forces - the innate capacity for spiritualization and for inverting evil into good. As a Christian and religious symbol, Pegasus was adopted from the attribution as the mount of Apollo, the God of pure light, beauty and truth to be included in the symbolic fauna of Christ.

Winged horses, in general, symbolize the transport of the soul of the deceased Christian to Heaven, and figuratively, like Apollo the Sun-god, represents Christ lifted up and, like the sun, 'Full of Glory,' and as the Revealer of Mysteries and the causer of refreshing (as in the passage: "They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings as eagles..." - Isaiah 40:31).

Also, during the Apocalypse, Pegasus has been compared to the "white horse" whom the conqueror rides in the book of Revelation in the Bible. Aside from being a general symbol of creative inspiration and poetry, the flying horse is an expression for speed, power and swift transport.

As an animal totem, Pegasus symbolizes the immortality of the soul, and serves as the carrier and protector of the spirit in its journeys to the astral plane (especially to the Moon - the emotional plane). Pegasus is closely linked to the Greek gods Poseidon (Neptune) [emotion ], his father; Athena (Minerva) [heavenly wisdom ], his protectress; Zeus (Jupiter) [guidance & creativity ] as his Thunder-bearer; and the Muse Urania [heavenly love ], his nursemaid, and the Muses [inspiration, memory and the arts ] in general; the heroes Perseus [intellect ] and Bellerophon [impudence ]; and the monsters Medusa [mortal wisdom ] and Chimaera [complex evil ].

These are more or less the reasons for which I chose the nick "Pegasus"

My explanation was lost in the rollback so I will re-post.

Somewhere between age 5 and 10, I became obsessed with jawbreakers. I always had my own stash so my freinds started calling me Rockjaw. As I got older I lost the nickname in the real world but I still use it online.

I know I posted about this...but never went into details. Anyway I got this name from a site called kabalarians.com. The problem was, how I found names before was on their old site. It was through cultures that I found this name. So when I wanted to look for a new name, I had to use their old site by going to the Internet Time Machine website. Their I was able to view their site from a year or two before, and find a name I wanted. Now, their site requires registration to view names by culture. So you can say I beat the system. Took me days to find a name I liked. Finally stuck with this one.

Yeah, I agree. I've had this handle, Mathmission, for nearly 10 years now. Maybe a little longer than that even

very sad really - a true techy story.

My first pooter was not Windoze (spit), but an Acorn RISCOS (Reduced Instruction System Computer) - nothing like Windoze (spit) and way better - even than a Mac.

I still have the original pooter and use it regularly, nearly 15 years on - how many PCs can you say that about??

Hence the nick - in homage (RIP) to the best OS ever, - FACT!

Sorry for the length (as the...) ask MM if you need an explanation of that ;)

good one! The story of mine is somewhere back in this thread, but I can go ahead and make another post about it. About 9 years ago, I was in school with a good friend of mine. 8th grade, I believe. Anyway, to pass notes back and forth to each other, we used a notebook. But in order to make sure that we would not get caught, we wrote the word MATH on the front of it (we were in Math Class) anyway, it became something that we did throughout all of high school, and now have several books detailing my entire high school experience. We called these books, Mathmissions.

Thanks. It's not a real good story but hey, it's something. I wish I had a more ellaborate story to tell, but that's really all it was. Had the same nick for years and years.

In 1976 I was born and named after the song "hey Carrie Ann".

recently I changed from Feenies-Wife to Carrie. Boring I know.

I was always wondering why you changed? Feel free to ignore the question if you wish.

Porkys much?

actually before Porkys, we used to use a bunch of weird names to abuse waitresses and PA announcers.

like:

Dinah Kanser
Dick Hertz
Seymour Butts

was amusing in back in the day..when more people had a sense of humour
