"Oh Crap" would be my response. I am not sure, but if you didn't put it there, and you didn't buy it used from someone who did, than someone has been intruding on your puter. Hopefully someone else will be able to help out more.

Nothing good I must say.
What kind of internet connection do you have?
Do you have some sort of Anti- virus?
It sounds like some one has definately been into your computer. There are a few things you can do...One, Disconnect from the internet and run a virus scan.
2) download and run Spybot.... if you dont already have it you can get it here.....http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download
3) run some kind of trojan program there is one called SWATT that has had some good revews. Another is called Trojan remover 6.0.2. it has a fully working 30 free trial. you can remove it after the 30 days. you can DL that here....http://www.simplysup.com/tremover/download.html
Other than that Im out of suggestions. anyone else?????

Well you CERTAINLY need a firewall, even if you only have dial-up.
for free - ZoneAlarm - http://zonelabs.com is excellent.
Just remember to stay current with Windows Updates also, as someone always said, "Another day, another update."

o yeh i got this in one of my scanners ...
FILE: C:\pagefile.sys
PROBLEM: I could not scan this file. Error Code 32: "The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process."
SOLUTION: A common reason for this error is that Windows has locked the file for
SOLUTION: exclusive access. A swap file is a common example. Also, an antivirus
SOLUTION: program might be denying access to the file. In that case, you can
SOLUTION: temporarily disable the anti-virus to clean the trojan.

have any idea what it means or what i should do ?

hey!.. i got this thing once...I don't remember what it was called.I think it was a trojan.Do you use overnet? That's how i got it.Through a download.
hmmm..i think this is what i did.
Avg detected it.Download avg here (www.grisoft.com).Select the free version.Do a scan and it'll tell you what it has found. Then do a recue disk using avg .It'll be in two floppies.Put the first floppy in the floppy drive then reboot. Then follow the instructions on the screen.
Get a firewall as the others suggested,If you try to delete it while in windows.. a window will pop up saying somethig like "i know that you are using zone alarm i could destroy your pc but i won't" or some thign to that effect.

You know, while that is totally scary, someone has a very base sence of humor to make that change....

That IS scary.
I wonder if that particular line Not You, no longer was stored somewhere in your registry.
It would be handy to know where that is stored.
Try searching for the exact phrase in your registry, and let us know if it shows up...and Where.:D
Might as well make something positive out of this and learn.

wow that sounds bad, right now all i have is the hardware firewall on my router, but as soon as i get home from my trip in Canada! Its great wall of China of firewalls baby, not to mention the XP firewall as well.
Does anyone know how to configure your XP firewall, or do you just click it on?

In my opinion Id just switch of the Xp firewall and use another I use Norton (which a lot of cows dont like ) but I have the resources to cope with it. It can be a bit of a hog but Ive got a lot of ram to waste ;)

what was the name of the registry key tht you changed??
(I am curious to know which key it is)
As far as your question, If you have done all the scans and cleaned everything up, just get yourself a firewall and you should be fine.
There is only so much you can do. just back up any irreplaceable data on removable media, just to be safe.

you dont want to be running 2 firewalls at the same time on 1 pc you will be entering"conflict hell" you will end up wishing you had only been hacked:D

In windows the key is:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MS Setup (ACME)\User Info]
The keys to change are:
DefName (registered name)
DefCompany (Registered company)

geffers: Shouldn't it be OK as one is Hardware and one Software?
The XP firewall sucks. If you need a software firewall, I recommend ZoneAlarm Pro 4, Sygate Pro or Kerio.

The XP firewall is ok, but it only blocks incoming threats. It will not prevent info from going out. That would not help with certain trojans that might already be on your system. For Dialup, I'd say that ZA free should do fine. Always keep all your security, Anti-Virus, and Spyware detectors up to date and check your system often

Did you download avg?
For me it was the only antivirus that seemed to detect the thing.Even though I'm no expert I strongly suggest that you download avg and run it.

the porn star + party list look like dialers if i was you i would run spybot or adaware, and earlier in the thread
nasrules i thought you meant 2 software firewalls if you mean a router and a software firewall on your pc that should be fine, but im sure that 2 software firewalls will be a complete nightmare.
nikkie it will pay you to take a trip to wilders the link is below:
link (http://www.wilders.org/)
spywareblaster and spywareguard are also a couple of small apps worth putting on your system you can pick them up for free at wilders
nikkie
07-13-2003, 03:25 PM
k did that , got a bunch of spyware files blocked now ...what about those files in the registry that i listed the pic for ... is it safe to delete those things ?
geffers
07-13-2003, 03:36 PM
if you delete them make sure you back up your reg first
then if anything untoward happens you have covered your a55, you run xp im not sure of the exact term for this(i run 2kpro) but on your roll back feature if you havent cleaned this if you roll back you will roll back with the virus/trojan intact lp is your man to tell you how to clean the roll back feature i have seen him explain it before but didnt pay too much notice cos it dont relate to me, but be care full about what you delete from your reg always back up.

now you got me really confused:confused:
As far as I can tell you wen t ahead and downloaded avg right?
Then you mentioned it cleaned 3 files and removed 8.
Then you went ahead and downloaded spywareblaster? and blocked some spyware?
Up until this part I was understanding you lost me after that...you might want to list all that you've done so more people can help you without having to read the whole thread...just a thought...

IF you are running XP, you should definately turn off your system restore, then check again. Viruses hide there as well.....

nikki that sounds well bad but if it was which it sounds like a trojan if you are on dail up there is an up side your ip changes everytime you go on the net this is what the hacker needs to get in they get it once ad they can ping it to get the next 10 ip's so you conect/disconect 11 times then they do not have it anymore but they can get it back if there is a hole in your security +++ run a virii check after every term on p2p
one more thing i picked up the most popular trojan used it sub7 it has a built in defence feature anyone using sub7 that tries to hack you there will open a counter attack window and you can get them back although this is fun prevention is the answer

Dont even bother with sub7, its a virus and very illegal(and lame), not to mention if you dont know what it is then you will likely just wind up running the server and become infected again. In a case like this revenge isnt something you should be concerned with because your just going to draw more attention to your machine, and probably break the law. I recommend downloading zone alarm and updating all your anti virus software. Next make sure your netbios file and printer sharing is disabled. As far as disconnecting/reconnecting goes give it a go it cant hurt..though i have never heard of being able to get what IP your ISP will asign you the next 10 times you connect just from a ping.Once you have done all this i recommend paying a visit to The Shields Up Webpage (https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2) and doing both their scans to see if your netbios is open as well as other vital ports, they will provide you with step by step tutorials to fix any problems that arise (such as how to disable file and printer sharing)
