I know, you can tape on VHS all day..download it & it's a problem. Just have to wait and see how far this goes.

Technically, it is illegal. If you download a TV show, are you going to get sued, doubtful. It is still copyrighted material, and the TV shows that are put up for downloading usually have the sponsors adds removed. Me personally, I would still download some of my favorite shows if the adds were left in, mainly because they are on TV stations not offered where I live. (UPN & WB)
However, the bottom line is, the **AA's want total control over what we see and hear, and how and when we see and hear it.

It is illegal...however I think their real fear is people picking their TV by the show not the network. I think most reasonable TV downloader would pay some fair amount for commerial free on demand TV. (specialy if its HDTV)

Alright, the lawyer in the class has to speak up. By law, you cannot reproduce anything broadcasted via television for public showing or for long term records. You must destroy the copy you make after 24 hours.
Do I do that; Heelly No. Should you; only if your afraid of the MIAA.

It's definitely not legal, but I have yet to see any case of someone getting in legal trouble or threats from ISPs over downloading shows with or without the ads cut out. Obviously if the TV folks decide, because of decreasing viewership, etc., to go the route of the music industry and blame it on filesharing, this will change and those sharing TV episodes only will be threatened. There could also be the problem of downloading DVD-rips of episodes released by Universal or other MPAA members - perhaps they're watching for illegal distribution of these just as vigilantly as they're watching for feature films?
