I have *TONS* of files that I want to share, but is it safe on Ares? Mebbe only share movies or programs? Certain music files only?

What do you all think?

as of now?

pretty safe

edit:

I should say the reason its safe is because no ones watching: not because Ares is secure

But its not a bad idea to have "Peerguardian" running in the background to cover your butt! *L* Better safe than sorry.

ya right now Ares is fine. I hope it stays that way for awhile :)

But Ares should start putting some secure stuff in now before the RIAA starts sniffing around.

ok i got that, but i just read this:this has been discussed quite a lot in the p2p politics forum. the general consensus is that peer guardian offers a false sense of security. it's just a basic software firewall that blocks connections from computers operating from within known riaa/mpaa/copyright enforcement networks. the reason this is not-so-useful is because these groups are not stupid -- at least not in this sense! media groups know that people are trying to block them. so, how do they get around our hefty efforts? simple: they move to another computer outside of the network. congratulations, you just got scanned and sued. --from http://slskboard.savagenews.com/index.php?showtopic=9276

is that true?

and besides, im sharing every single thing that is bad.
heh and as an example im on ares right now and there are 1,330 gb shared. I alone will add 53 gb by myself. Is that smart?

Well, short of not connecting to the net, nothing is going to protect you completely.

But the bottom line is, any extra protection is better than none at all. True, the bad guys can switch IP's, however, every effort is made to keep these IP's updated so they can't spy on you.

False sense of security, I don't think so. Taking precautions, you bet... The decision is yours whether to take this extra precaution.

I agree with gbread. Nothing is fool proof, but using peerguardian is better than nothing. Also make sure that no one can see what you are sharing, that helps a little as well. Unfortunately, the more you share, the greater the chances of getting caught. So far, the RIAA has not gone after any Ares users that I know of. That doesn't mean that they won't. I am still waiting to see some of the "accused" try to make the RIAA prove that they did anything wrong. They have already screwed up enough to create "reasonable doubt" in front of a jury. So far, they are mostly just bullying and scaring people into settling. And it is working. :mad1:

Agree with RB...So far, the RIAA is only picking on the little folks with their law-suits (you and me) because they figure they can get away with it because we don't have the clout or money to stand up to them.

Has anyone seen the RIAA take on someone big or well known that will stand up to them, I'd seriously doubt it! The last thing they want is for someone to involve them in a long drawn out court battle. (Very bad publicity for the RIAA)

Thats something else I've wondered about, what is the Constitutionally of the RIAA "picking and choosing" who they want to sue. In other words, if they have a list of 1000 people who are "assumed quilty" it seems to me they would be bound to sue all of them, not just who they desire to sue!

see, peerguardian is helpful- ask anyone for their logs after they download some- I saw one guy with a universal studio IP being blocked about once per minute!

as said above, its better than nuttin!

and dont worry about ares yet! plus 53 gig is nothing- are you sure theres only ~1 tb on ares? thats pretty pathetic considering their user base

yea thats correct, not much being shared when i was on. I also was digging around and in the chat rooms, no one is sharing in there either. I'm trying to be a good guy and get some media out there (so its easier for me too), but im still having some difficulty d/l myself.

Btw, does peerguardian run all the time, only when I tell it to, or what?
I have a hardware firewall already, and am not really interested in having another task running in the background all the time. I am also only using these progs (ares, kazaa, emule, winmx) for short periods of time. --until im done d/l :D.

btw, the game Mafia is cool.

You have the option of running PG any time or all the time. It serves little purpose to run it, if you aren't running any P2P app though.

I think there is more content on Ares than what is shown at any one time. I think it depends on what Super Node you are on, or what ever it is called. Maybe some of our more experienced and knowlegeable Ares users can answer this. ;)

10,000 users per Super Node at this time.
