Hmmmmm, lets hope LPDad gets here soon..............
Other than a reformat and a fresh install, I really don't know what to suggest. It just might have something to do with the serial ATA drive, maybe there are drivers on the MoBo disk?
You say you have all the critical updates for XP, but did you install the SP1? I didn't have any usb ports until I did that.
Sorry bud, I'm just takin pot shots here.

I am going to try running msconfig and shut down programs I have installed to see if they are causing this. Also I am going to run a Registry Clean up utility to see if maybe the problem is there. Can anyone suggest a good clean utility? If this fails, I will have to reformat and reinstall... :(:(:(:hammered:

Didja do what -pin- suggested?
And I guess this is pretty obvious and maybe too late, but did you try system restore?
I'm outta ideas. When all else fails, reformat......................

unfortunately I have only had this comp up and running for less then 1 week so I didn't have a restore point before this started...If I look in system information under error reporting this is what it shows everytime I get the error with windows explorer and the control panel.

You have some Bad files in there-- somehow, the wrong versions of the files were installed/updated.
The easiest way to fix this is to do a REPAIR install (as lion suggested)
Put your XP disc in and boot from it, then proceed as if you are doing a new install of windows XP. A couple of steps into it, the installer will DETECT a previous installation of Windows.
At this point..you will be shown where the previous version of windows was found (c:/windows).
type in "R" to repair the selected version of windows.
this should take about 40 minutes or so and should keep all of your previous settings.
When you are finished, make sure you immediatly apply SP1--before you do anything else.
THEN...after sp1 has been installed....you want to download and install the WINDOWS XP Rollup. This has ALL of the updates through 15 Oct 03 in one 10 mb download.
You can get the Rollup here: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=826939
and, somewhere EARLY in this reinstall mess...you want to install and update your antivirus..to prevent your getting accidently infected by the blaster worm and all of its varients.

Just to let you know...I have a computer I have been fighting with for 3 weeks....one thing after another.
I have replaced just about everything on it...major problem was a bad memory chip, but now the windowsxp installation has developed a fatal flaw somewhere...I think it is due to a driver, but so far I have not been able to track down the specific cause.
I am about to do a complete reformat...I have to save all the old data off of it first. All of these problems started occuring after this puter (belongs to a friend of mine) became infected with SEVERAL of those stupid blaster varients. Really screwed things up, and messed up the harddrive something fierce.
Sometimes it is just quicker and more effective to bite the bullet and do a complete reformat and clean install.--- or in the case of WinME..just burn the CDs.:hammered:

Probably the best route in the long run. If yer havin problems like that this early in the install, you were probably gonna have a lot more down the road.............
