Hi,

has anyone had this problem before?

- when I try to log off/restart/etc. The process get's as far as the "saving your settings" stage, and stays there forever - untill I use the manual restart button on the outside of my box. (after which the restart process is normal, no problems)

- usualy there are a few programs that windows has to ask me to terminate when shutting down (not responding dialogue) - namely nvidia something and hidden faxview

- the problem seems to have started when I got ADSL...
also, when the service is poor ("link" LED on modem flashes or goes out) it'll cause the connection to hang - no way to reconnect without restart, even if that LED has gone back on.

- I'm using XP home with all the latest updates, on a P4 2.44GHz machine with an external USB modem.

- wow - long post.

hope someone can help???

I know with Broadband, my log & logout is longer than it was on dial-up..it needs to find all the settings and stuff. As for you hanging problem, try shutting down the programs you have running 1st before you shutdown, this way you might find out which one is causeing the hangup.

well,
I can't say that I've noticed startup/shutdown taking any longer really.
and I've tried shutting things down before the startup and reseting with nothing running - when I say that there are programs that ask for confirmation, I mean background kinda stuff (I guess the're processes and not applications?) things that (I guess) are startup programs or something - it's usually the two: NVIDIA twin view (or something similar) and hidden FaxView.

the thing is, the problem only appears if I get disconnected because of trouble on the line (blinking "link" LED), or if I've been logged on for several hours, even if the internet connection is working fine.

This is a VERY COMMON problem.
Allow me to steer you in the right direction:

Oh, and 1shot1kill, make sure you follow the directions to disable the REBOOT ON ERROR command.

That will stop your constant reboot problem.

there are 2 programs that will help you...

1) ZOOM ...was made to solve your startup and shut down problems FREE ( um... er... 30 day trial) from www.dachshundsoftware.com - look in the SOFTWARE section.
* 'converted' version can be found *cough* around)

2) Big Fix ...."fix it before it fails" ...FREE program( for home users) once installed keeps your machine up to date on all patches ...drivers...upgrades and diagnoses potiental failures before they occur.
A very cool program.

www.bigfix.com/website/products/consumer.html

You subscribe(free) to sources relevant for your machine and operating system - from the Big Fix site.
Then you receive updates(fixlets)as required when you run the program.
No need to keep Big Fix running ...you just check back about once a week to check for updates.
You decide if you want to install what it recommends.
No spyware or ad-ware.

Hope these help you!!;) :type:
