napster is comming out very soon. It's been bought by roxio, and it offer's 500,000 songs from all different genres of music, and all different kinds record labels. because it's legal, and i would assume that it's RIAA approved, do you think there will be a monthly charge of bandwidth on how much you dowload per week/month etc.?

I don't know how they'll end up charging for it. The thing that I can't understand is that they're going to use Windows Media Audio instead of MP3. Now I know WMA is supposed to have better audio quality than MP3, but Napster and MP3 are synonimous, so that's the part I don't get.

it's wma because that's usually what Cd's ripp to as now. instead of waves. i like them better because they're slightly smaller, and when you copy the cd, you dont have to convert them to mp3 cause all mp3 players read wma and so does winamp.

The Reason WMA will be used, is becasue M$ sold out to the RIAA, and will be incoprorating DRM technology (aka Palladium) as soon as they can get away with it. They are trying to control how any purchased audio will be used. They say, we don't really buy the music, just the disc. The music is just being rented. That is where that so called "intellectual property right" comes in. It is all about control.

I will not be using the new napster. ;)

drm is already being used. it's been implemented on the new media player, we don't have to wait for the next OS ;)

Thank goodnes the use of their media player is optional. WinAmp, QCD, & foobar are still great alternatives. ;)

you cant play some wma's without some sort of key i think. So you cant send the music to a friend or share it on a network if you download from napster2. But im sure there is a way to get around it...

I wouldn't worry about their next OS too much. I used Kazaa-lite and WinMX on Windows Longhorn and they both worked great!

No, we were talking about the new Napster an the use of proprietary media. (aka Windows Media/DRM Technology which is what Palldium is all about) I plan on stayng away from all Windows Media for just that reason. ;)

yosuuf posted that windows media files need a jey to be shared, that's not true.
if "copy protect" is checked when you rip CD with windows media, it will only encrypt the files so that you can burn them off of your computer again.

WinMX still works...hehe. Maybe you should check your settings. :)

If you go to the new napster website they have screen shots! I had to see what they had done to the legend. They surely did mess it up pretty good, imo.
