Hello LouDog, and Welcome to the Herd!
As far as which p2p is best, you should get many opinions on this. SoulSeek is good for "out of the mainstream music," and WinMX still has many rarer files, if you are willing to wait in line for a long time.

never mind that, i downloaded it, but when i try to connect i get this error.
Could not resolve server address. If your internet connection is up, this might be a temporary problem with your name resolution service.
has anyone else ever got that?

Yep, sure have. The SoulSeek server goes down fairly frequently. It ususally comes back on within a few hours. Try it again later. It is a good program other than that. You can even set up a private network to share files with friends of your own choice, and no one else can search or connect to you. ;)

Hello there LouDog! Welcome to the community! What firewall do you have? And with most/all firewalls, when a program is trying to connect to the net for the first time, the firewall pops up asking if you want to allow the program to connect. And in the case of SoulSeek, you would of course anwser yes. :)
I've been using SoulSeek like mad man lately! It's become my fav p2p program. I was just using it too, so you might try connecting now. :)

It also seems that the SoulSeek webpage as moved from slsk.org to http://www.slsknet.org/
You can get the latest version there. I bet the reason why you can't connect is because you got the first 149 version. Which was later replaced by a fixed 149 version that fixed this DNS connection problem. So go to the site above and get the 149b version. It should work! :)

One really good program to use for rare stuff is filetopia. You can join and search channels according to your tastes and most channels are pretty friendly.
