What's the worst weather you've had?

Right now, we're dealing with this snow mess. It melts during the day, and freezes into ice overnight. For some reason, our city decided to bank on the idea that there wasn't going to be much snow this year, so they didn't send the trucks out in effort to save money. Well, they really messed up, as now they can't scrape as it's all turned to ice.... They took too long.

Something similar to you, MM - but not as bad on the infrastructure.

I was in Korea for 2 years and they had their worst winter in 50 years while I was there - 4 months of snow and and ice : from December 24th (so we had a white Xmas), until mid April.

It was not fun!

I can remember when I was little and we lived in Minot, ND. Can't remember the exact year but we had a huge blizzard and the snow drifts were horrible! I can remember my dad digging a tunnel out the back door just so he could walk to see my mom who was snowed in at her work and couldn't get home.

I think the worst that we had once, was several inches of ice, but I didn't really experience it. It was in my hometown while I was in college.

Our county was declared a disaster.

GALESBURG - Gov. Rod Blagojevich declared Knox County and 48 other counties state disaster areas Tuesday as communities continue cleaning up after last week's storm dropped record or near-record snowfall across a large portion of the state.
Galesburg Fire Chief and Emergency Management Agency Coordinator John Cratty said the declaration means there may be money available for local agencies that have had additional expenses due to the storm.

Cratty said the biggest cost for local municipalities has been overtime related to snow removal. He will submit information to the Illinois Emergency Management Agency this week and find out at a later date whether reimbursement funds will be available for local agencies.

This is the first time Knox County has been declared a state disaster area since Cratty became EMA Coordinator in 1998.

"We had a snow emergency declared in the late 1990s," Cratty said.

"But I can't think of another time we would have been declared a disaster area."

Cratty said the local American Red Cross chapter also may be eligible for reimbursement, due to the organization's role in getting food and supplies to motorists stranded for many hours on Friday at the Spoon River Rest Area, 13 miles east of Galesburg on Interstate 74.

Five days and 1,800 truckloads of snow later, the city of Galesburg is still digging out from Friday's snowfall.

"I think we've been maybe a little spoiled, we meaning the citizenry of Galesburg, by 2-inch, 4-inch, 6-inch snows that we can get cleared up in eight to 10 hours," said Public Works Director Larry Cox.

Cox said 25 city workers have been clearing streets around the clock since 1 a.m. Friday. He hadn't yet calculated overtime, but said before the storm there was about $13,000 remaining in the street division's $27,000 overtime fund.

"We're still under budget," Cox said, attributing the remaining money to a mild winter during the fiscal year that began Jan. 1, 2006.

The crews have been moving the snow from city streets to the street division property and to the former Finley Road at the intersection of Linwood Road and Fremont Street.

For the next couple days, crews will be cleaning out intersections and pushing the snow back to street curbs.

"There will be some snow pushed at the end of (residents') driveways and there's just no other way around that without doubling our work force, which is not an option," Cox said.

He said the crews will have to work around the cars parked in the streets.

The Galesburg Police Department has issued 34 tickets for cars parked in restricted areas during a snow emergency.

Today, the department will begin checking on vehicles to see if they've been parked in the same spot for more than 72 hours, an ordinance violation.

If so, tickets will be issued and the cars will be towed, said Capt. Lindsay May.

"They need to know to get their vehicles off the street," May said. "The street department has to get (to) those areas."

As for other operations, the post office has caught up with mail delivery.

Mail trucks from Peoria are now arriving on-time to the Galesburg post office and carriers worked until just after 7 p.m. Monday to deliver all backed-up mail, said Postmaster Patricia Kollberg.

"We wanted to get those checks out ... we had first of the month checks," Kollberg said. "We're anxiously wanting to serve our customers and get everything back to normal as far as consistency of delivery."

Yikes!?

At least you're using salt to clear up the ice and snow, right?

Our city voted against the use of salt for ice purposes, so in their brilliance, they throw down ash. Yep... ash...

The_Amber
12-08-2006, 07:52 AM
yea, which makes everything dirty. We use both salt and the one stuff they put on tracks for running....I can't think of what they call that though.

I have been meaning to get outside and take pictures but I don't have time until it is night and -10 degrees outside with 31 MPH wind gusts. I am afraid, If I take the camera outside even for a very short time that it might get messed up. I will try to remember tomorrow during the day to take pictures.

Sand at least gives traction... salt makes it go away.

When I was maybe 7, we had a huge blizzard on Halloween. I remember that. Apparently a week later there was another huge snowstorm... but I don't remember that.

One of my first memories is when I was real little. The snow was as tall as me!

A few winters ago, I drove down I-94 going about 25mph the whole way back to the Cities... the speed limit is 70mph. Visibility was complete shit. I found out that they closed the highway just north of where I was because it was so bad. Almost drove into the back end of a semi because I couldn't see its lights until it was almost too late.

Jesus, I'm really not looking forward to winter now. We've been lucky so far. Everything keeps missing us....

mathmission
12-13-2006, 09:59 AM
Yeah, even sand would be nice, but no, we throw down black ash from our local powerplant. I've heard that this winter is supposed to bring us pretty heavy weather.... hopefully they'll be wrong.

Course, the weather people are wrong nearly 65% of the time anyway.

I can remember 2 blizzards when i was living in maryland, Blizzard of "79" when we were off school for 2 weeks and had to dig tunnels thru the snow just to go over to the neighbors house.
Then there was the Blizzard of "96" i was already living in florida but i drove back to MD. for my sisters wedding. 3 hours after the wedding it snowed almost 20 inches stopped for a day then snowed another 12 inches of wet that froze everything i missed 2 weeks of work for that one.
But all i have to deal with now is Hurricanes and Tropical storms.

Today was rather interesting. I woke up and looked outside and everything was hazy. Since I live near a major river, fog had settled over the area, so it was this really beautiful cold foggy quiet sort of atmosphere everywhere.

Well, we just got over a bit of ice here. We had about an inch to deal with and it's about gone. But now they're saying on the radio that this weekend, we might get as much as six additional inches of snow on the ground. Not that that bothers me, but since it's cold as all fruck, this stuff never melts, and since our city prides itself on its brilliance, we throw down black cinder instead of ice to prevent slippage.

We just got 4 inches of snow, but it was the real wet type, and it was a bit above freezing yesterday, so a lot of it melted. Not too much of it stayed on the streets at all. Good snow ball snow though. Kat and I also made a little snowman out front of my apartment.

I don't imagine that the snow will be here for much longer though.

Nasty snow with ice storm hard on its heels passed thorugh here yesterday. To unfortunatly continue today, thank goodness none of it stuck around but making one hell of a mess. Had to go out in it yesterday and file my taxes and ended up doing a 360 in the middle of a turn, LOL! Didn't do any damage but had my mom in the car with me and scared the hell outta her. Ally was riding in the backseat wanted to do it again....needless to say we didn't but it made for an interesting day!

mathmission

You know where that term comes from? Yes? Well too bad, cause I'm going to tell you!

Back in the day of wooden war ships on the ocean, and cannons, these great ships had to carry their cannon balls in huge storage rooms below deck. What they did was create a mold that they would set 16 balls into (a grid of 4 by 4). On top of that, they would set 8 then 4, then one. Anyway, these cannon balls were made of iron. The one thing about iron is that when it gets cold, it begins to expand.

Well, those molds I was talking about earlier were made of brass, because it was cheap, and were called MONKEYS. So, when it got cold, the cannon balls would expand, and cause them all to fall out of their place off the MONKEY.

Hence the term: Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.
