now i know that by 'file sharing' we are breaking copyright laws

the music industry has gotten fed up with this and is now suing people and file sharing creators because of dramatic falls in cd sales but i want to make 1 point which has been on my mind for some time

how many people here have or have freinds who have mtv and other music video channels

i dont know about u but is this not 'free music' also it is free and you see the songs you want a few times a day and loads of others as well for FREE now i dont know about you but does this not save money so people oh i duno dont spend it on cds think about it you pay £4 for a single where as u cand see and here it totlay free on music channels 24/7

yet this is leagal and of course it has no effect what so ever on music sales dropping or so the riaa make it out it is soley down to us the 'criminals' on the internet.

now who here thinks this is right or am i just talkin $h*t again ??

couple of things..

mtv and the like are not free.. for example, you see advertising.

i think you are asking an open question: could cd sales be down because of mtv? i would doubt it. firstly, if mtv is anything like much music, it has a pretty regular rotation and you don't really get a lot of choice in what you hear. radio is like this too. but what makes this different from radio is that is has to come out of a tv, which is really inconvenient as far as music is concerned. i have a feeling MORE cds are sold thanks to mtv and radio because how else are the record companies going to give a large audience a taste of the more popular music they want to push? i think radio and particularly tv are suited to this because both lend to inconvenience and low quality just enough for us to be teased into buying the discs.

so why not just put it all online, with low quality teaser tracks? i think the main reason is still that the record companies generally believe it's TOO interactive. maybe they are afraid they won't tap into the biggest market, which doesn't want to go to the trouble of turning on the pc, connecting, finding the site, then searching the site, making sure they have the right player or codec, and then downloading the teaser. personally, i think they give the consumer to little credit.

i really have a difference of opion here i dont know how things are in america bu in the uk there are many mtvs and kerang smash hits ect all of these play the songs that are popular for each genere they play to suit.

take kerrang they play rock music of all kinds now i find that i will hear at lest 6 songs in an hour that i like already and a few that i hear and also now like this just means that i dont rush out to buy it because it is so poular on the tv that it is played very regularly

although some people may rush out to buy a cd once they hear a song it just makes me want to download it ;)

i am just trying to separate out the reasons for falling cd sales obviously file sharing i playing a big role in this and the riaa is doing the stupid thing and not embracing it but i feel that other things are playing a role in the downfall of cd sales

i think the 'single' will be the first to go because it is a song which is on the album already and there may now with bands be 4/5 songs releaased as a single form the album so it is sensible to buy the album instead.

another point i want to make is the biggest age group in the world are the post war babies (anyone born between 1945 - 1950) with this huge number of people no longer buying 'popular' music cd sales are going to fall though there being less people to buy cds

i have another point il make it later i have 2 go 2 skul lol
