So, let's do a little math....
A standard work day at the University I work at, is 8 to 5. Keep in mind that you get one hour off for lunch...
So, to recap... a standard work day.. is 8 hours. Let's call this X
And let's just assume that everyone here makes the same horrible pay that I get, doing horrible jobs, not really resulting in anything. That number is $11.0000 an hour. And yes, the additional zeros are necessary. Let's call this number Y
So, (X)(Y) = Z --Z being grand total for the day...
So, (8)(11) = 88
And so, $88.0000 is what a standard worker at this school will make a day.
And let's say that we all work 5 days a week. This is W.
(Z)(W) = SWI, Standard Weekly Income
So, (88)(5) = $440
Now that we have that... let's look at what the brilliant workers have elected to do. Remember, this was voted upon, and overwhelmingly approved.
Let's assume that all workers at MU still make $88 a day. And that they work 8 hour days...
But for summer hours, these smart workers have voted to start a half hour earlier (7:30am) and get out a half hour earlier (4:30pm.)
It at first appears that there is no difference, outside of start and end time...
But, one of the stipulations for this change is that they give up 30 minites of their break. That's right, they got rid of 1/2 the time they have off.
Now, one would only assume that they would then claim 8h30min for the day's work.
Any sane person would.
But now...these brilliant people also agreed to give up that extra thirty minutes in terms of pay. See--when you work for more than 8 hours a day in a government position, you are required to be paid this wonderful thing called overtime. Well, since the university doesn't want to pay that, it was added in the stipulation that they not be paid for this 'extra' 30 minutes.
So, let's just play another number game. Let's assume that there are 1400 people working here at my school. That number could be way off on either ends. It's merely used to demonstrate things....
Standard work hour week is $440.0000
$440.0000 times 1400 people = $616,000.0000 a week
A summer work hour week is $412.5000
$412.5000 times 1400 people = $577500.0000
$616,000 minus $577500 = $38,500
Summer hours are from May 15th to August 11th, or rather...9 weeks.
$38,000 times 9 = $342,000.0000
So, in short, the brilliant workers of this fine educational institution have decided to give up $342,000 in standard pay so that they can come 30 minutes earlier, leave 30 minutes earlier, AND give up 30 minutes of their lunch time.
Feel free to check the numbers. I just figured I'd post this, as I opted to work 8am to 5pm, one hour lunch break, making my $440 a week.
It just baffles me. Then again, my state did vote a dead guy into office, and one of our counties did vote for a tax hike, but turned down the primary spending plan for said tax hike.
