TELSTRA plans to use Sun Microsystems' just released Mad Hatter desktop software as a replacement for Microsoft Windows as a part of its massive technology revamp.
elstra chief information officer Jeff Smith said the telco had been trialling Mad Hatter - which was formally launched in the US yesterday as Sun Java Desktop - as part of a series of pilot programs aimed at reducing IT costs.
Telstra hopes to cut up to $750 million from its $1.5 billion annual IT budget. It has targeted Microsoft Windows and Office desktop products, as well as Microsoft's server platforms as areas of potential savings.
Mr Smith said the Mad Hatter desktop had been part of its overall trials involving the open source Linux platform.
