View Full Version : Just HOW MUCH audio do you have on your computer?

Intimidated

I just performed my annual inventory of my hard drive, and I was pretty taken aback at how much audio (including music and audio books) I have stored on my drive:

236 hours, 25 minutes and 56 seconds, the equivalent of 191.6 full audio CD's, which uncompressed would be 124.6gb. Compressed these files are taking up 24.3gb.

Firstly, could some clever guy work out the average bitrate of my files? :)

And also... how much do you have on YOUR compy?

With a 40 gig hd, I have to be a little more selective, but I am sure I have anywhere from 3 - 4 gigs, in both ogg and mp3 ranging from 128 - 192 kbps. Sometimes I wipe them all out, and rip again, just to try out new rippers. (lol)

Of course, every single audio file is off of CD's I purchased and ripped myself, all legal like. I am sure this applies to Intimidated's and everyone else's as well. ;)

err...never mind. i just redid it and i got a totally different answer. let me write it out

The Boinker

method:

236 hours divided by 24 to get gigabytes per hour. divided by 60 for gigas per minute. divided by 60 for gigas per second. times 1000 for megas a second. times 1000 for kilobytes per second. times 8 for kilobits per second.

21851 kilobits per second..

what did i do wrong?

edit

new answer using write out method

Okay, you guys will laugh at this: I have 66.8 megabytes (yes megabytes not gigabytes) of MP3's. All of them are mine except one and they're all 192kbps encoded with EAC and LAME. I have 17 files total.

By the way, I have a 40gb hard drive and I'm currently using only 3.63gb of space total for everything.

About 40 gigs. BTW I was trying to deleat some movie files I had (ripped from my own DVDs of course :D) but I have a few that will not deleat. I get a message that says "This file is being used by another aplication" I have no idea what it could be. I have a lot of p2p programs that have access to this folder. Could it be one of them,or maybe one of the players I have installed ? Is there a way I can tell what aplication is useing the file?

Boinker, the answer is as follows:

if you have 236 hours of music, and that is about 24 GB, then:

(24 GB / 236 h) * (1024 MB / 1 GB) * (1024 KB / 1 MB) * (1 h / 3600 s) * (8 Kbits / 1 KB) = 201326592 Kbits / 849600 s

approximate = 237 Kbits/s.

this is the method you used.. does this seem right to you?

I've got 16.4 GB of mp3s, ranging from 128kbps - 360kbps (of course the majority of my mp3s are 192kbps). The exact amount I have...? Well that's kinda secret. If you want to know, you do the math. ;)

I just thought of something, I could make a fortune if I ratted you guys out to the RIAA!!!

(I'm kidding, they're so greedy they'd probably only give me a coupon for a free soda or something.)

lol...how dare you even think of the idea! :wow: you should be ashamed of yourself! hehe...you're right, they'd be like, "Thank you Sir for helping save my pocket-booooo...the artists. Your efforts are appreciated. Here's a gift card to Wal-Mart, and the new Justin Timberlake CD!"

Guess who are visiting this site, and probably all other p2p related sites....
At least that's what i think, i guess they want to know wich p2p programs are populair, so they can set their next target.
So, be carefull with what you say on the i-net.

I am sure they know we are here, but let's not give them too much credit. After all, this is the same group who thinks that putting "copy protection" on CD's will prevent the audio on them from being copied. We all know that if it can be heard, it can be copied. Obviously not Rhodes Scholars there. ;)

Well I got 10.8 gig of ALBW's back up copies of my own stuff, I like to compile me own cd's as i think I do a better job than the a lot of the originals. Why do producers always put at least 2 naff tracks on any given CD's:D:D:D

Let's see..................

For any of you RIAA trolls that may be lurking about I have every song ever recorded on every format and I am getting the files you release every day :thebird:

Let's just say that I have my entire CD collection in MP3's, which is over 200. You can guess the albums and do the math.

I've lost count on how many times I've filled up my harddrive and had to delete it all only to fill it up again (it's only 20gb).
Newsgroups are sick.
