BitTorrent is not a secure means for peer to peer. The BSA(business software alliance) monitors BitTorrent. There is a large number of complaints about users downloading / sharing items over bit torrent and the BSA is finding them.

The BSA monitors every BitTorrent transfer made on the net. if you have used BitTorrent for an illegal transfer, your IP is known to the BSA and you have been branded as a software pirate. they are issuing reports to providers and demanding identities and that service be discontinued. and they're not the only ones.

To gather evidence the RIAA will use software that scans for directories (folders) made available in P2P networks. When it finds such directories, it downloads some of the available files and records the date and time. The RIAA then uses publically available information to identify the computer user's ISP, from which it will obtain the user's name and address.

BBC News Post (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/music/3021126.stm#graphic)

The US record industry is planning to sue people who swap music over the internet.
Starting on Thursday, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) says, it will gather evidence against users of "peer-to-peer" software such as Kazaa, and file $150,000 (£90,000) lawsuits against them.

The RIAA says its sales have been hit hard by the software, which allows users to swap music, films, and other files over the internet.

But the president of one peer-to-peer site blasted the RIAA threat as counter-productive.
"When you start suing all your customers, it's not going to leave a good taste in their mouths," Wayne Rosso, of Grokster, told BBC News Online.
"They're out of their minds," he said.

The RIAA - whose members include AOL Time Warner, Vivendi Universal, Sony, Bertelsmann and EMI - says it will target the heaviest users of song-swapping services.

Its president, Cary Sherman, said: "We're going to begin taking names and preparing lawsuits against peer-to-peer network users who are illegally making available a substantial number of music files to millions of other computer users."

that just sucks it would be nice if all the P2Pers out there stopped buying from these labels for awhile to show them exactly what can happen when they start suing people. There are a lot more of use then them.

I wouldn't recommand downloading any type of movie screeners or workprint in which the movie was released date was lot long ago.(Terminator 3 type of stuff. Released not long ago) The MPAA is especially targeting users downloading cam screeners but interestingly not dvd rips. Just download "unpopular" files and you would be a little safer.

Do you think it would be wise to download latest TV Show episodes off BT, or do you think its pushing it? I'm just asking becuase the last thing i want is a C&D letter in the post. Im not dumb enough to get the latest blockbuster movies or games like T3 or Matrix Reloaded, thats suicide. Just wondering if you guys think getting a tv episode is risky or not?

I've always believed TV shows were exempt from copyright law since they've been aired on public waves and trading vhs tapes isn't illegal.
Pay-per-view is different.

come on people show a bit of backbone here if everyone behaves in this way the riaa and their cronies will walk this without so much as a decent struggle.
just download whatever you want whenever you want i havent changed my d/loading habbits and i have no intention of doing so either.
if your isp sacks you just get another whats the point in p2p if you dont download new and popular stuff just go for it.

Unfortuinately Geff, it's not that simple for eveyone. I fully plan on fighting back, and will keep downloading and sharing, but it is a risky business. If getting kicked off of an ISP was all there was at stake, then no one would buckle at all. I doubt the RIAA will go after many people, as it would be suicide, but they aren't very smart, or are just desperate enough to do it anyway. They got billions of $ at stake after all, even though they get it unfairly an in what should be illegal ways. Keep sharing, but vigilant at the same time. We can still win in the end. ;)

Downloading stolen/pirated software and movies aren't guaraunteed to me by my country's constitution. Maybe if you liberate it to the point of meaninglessness, but no, it's not a right or something that's even remotely necessary for survival. Therefore, I don't see anything in it that's worth fighting for. I'm not risking a prison sentence for bad movies and warez.

Private DC++ hubs, occasional SoulSeeking, and newsgroups are all I want.

Actually, I believe that recording from the radio and TV is actually illegal if you sell/swap the tapes.

Ya but if you dont sell/swap tapes you can do it all you want

I believe somebody brought that up in court in defending p2p...if people can do that why can't they p2p?

Or something like that...

i hear that waste is a very secure p2p app but i think just staying away from the 1million user progs is the safest option try a smaller comunity that is yet to be bothered like ares very good

alternitivly private hubs on DC may be the way to go but im not to knowing about this

thats another 5 bucks for me. suckas.

yeah, i dont p2p much anymore, but when i do, its all private shibbby like waste, FTP, IRC private rooms, and the like. then again, comcast seems to catch on because after particularly fitful days (couple o gigs in 10 hours or so) they always disconnect me for about 1 minute at a time over and over again (*******s)

theflinger - Really? Comcast has been doing the same thing to me too lately. I thought it was just them being unreliable, never guessed they might've been deliberately trying to shake me off. Wow. Savvy.

but the thing with me is that im networked through my bro's computer, so i cant connect to most computers unless i use kazaa, or BT. Even if i do, i get a poor download rate.
