Okay, what if you download a song by an artist that is no longer with us (you know, gone on to be with the Lord.) For example: Elvis, J.S. Bach. How do you guys feel about that?

By strict letter of the current outdated law, they are still considered copy-protected. This was upheld in the fairly recent case involving early Walt Disney cartoons. Our current copyright laws are archaic to say the least. This is what give the evil empires of the **AA's their power.:(

yea I dont think it should still be copy righted. What exactly are these artists gaining from it?

It may be a little harsh but heres my opinion on it:

The royalties still go to whom ever inherited the rights to these songs. Eventually these offf spring will run out of money, and start to cry about downloading music and blah blah blah. IMO- they need to suck it up and stop riding the gravy train. Go out and get jobs of their own or start producing music of their own.

Elvis' music is still copyrighted in the US, however Bach, Bethoven, etc... their music is not. A copyright currently in the US lasts 95 years (In Europe, it's around 50).

So download all the Bach you want!

Do you really want to know what I think? I think that recorded music is a way to get famous, not rich. How many CDs do you think the artists gave out in order to get recognized to begin with? If I pay to go to a concert, I pay for the performance of the band, not the corporations that are only there to suck the live from song. I do not pay for music, and that makes me want to see them in concert again, again, and again.

By the way (Good song), I got to go back stage with Chevelle, an upcoming band you may heard of, and bombarded them with stories about how I special ordered their first CD 5 years ago and I was their biggest fan and do you know what they told me? "Oh wow I see you bought our shirt." They don't get money for their CDs. Otherwise they would never tour.

you maybe right about how they don't make money off their CDs and just their merchandise and their tour. But that is not the way it should be. They should making a large portion of the CD and all the money (which i think they do) off their merchandise. CDs are a rip off for artists just a expensive promotion tool IMO

My self justification of downloading music has nothing to do with how it should be. The corporations self justification of blood sucking has nothing to do with how it should be. So I figured that the best way to get the music back to the makers is by giving the corporations a reason to regret not being more involved in the creation of what we is music. Fearless Records is not a member of RIAA because they use p2p to get their bands out there. Who hasn’t downloaded Aquabats (If you’re into that thing)?

And by the way (still love that song), yes it is expensive to hand out cds for promotion. It’s easier to download it.
