This is really simple.
First decide on the colors you are going to use for your button.
Create a new file ( what size you want your button to be when you finish) In this example I am using 50X50
Fill with color of choice, I am going to use a gradient, Black to red, and I reversed (check box at top) and dragged from left upper corner, diagnal (going toward the lower right corner)
double click on the layer (in your layers pallete)
Add blending option Bevel Emboss:
Use these settings:
Innerbevel
smooth
depth 31
Up
size 5
Leave the rest as default settings.
Change your forground color to the color you are going to use for your inset color, in the color options boxes on the left hand side.
Click on the elliptical tool and draw a circle in the middle of the square.
Shift+Ctrl+N
Edit>Fill>Forground
Double click to bring up your blending options.
Add an inner shadow:
opac: 75
Angle: -55
Distance 4
Size:13
Leave everything else on the default settings
Shift+Ctrl+N
Hit D on your keyboard, then flip the boxes so that white is in the top box.
chose your gradient tool, and chose white to transparent. Drag from top to bottom, halfway through your tiny ball.
merge down that layer.
Double click on the tiny circle layer, Bringing up your blending options.
Click on Drop shadow, Then uncheck the Global setting box
Using the following settings:
Angle: 120
Distance: 0
spread: 11
Size: 7
Now you have your inset button.
