Okay, so I downloaded the newest version of Media Player Classic (6.4.6.2), but it won't install. I can double click the installation icon, but it just sits there and won't do anything. If I hit ctrl+alt+del there isn't anything in there either besides the usual stuff (explorer, systray.) There are no errors that come up, it just isn't doing anything. I have 6.4.5.8 on my computer now, but the new one doesn't want to install for some reason. Any ideas?

Media player classic doesn't install. All you need to do is unzip the folder, (I unzip it to my desktop) and move the folder containing the "mplayerc.exe" file into your C:\Program Files folder. Click on the program, and run it. ;)

I know you have to unzip the folder, I did that, the install icon I meant was the actual .exe icon, not the .zip it came in. mplayerc.exe is the one I click, but it doesn't do anything.

If the .exe doesn't do anything, then you may have a bad copy. Delete it, and try downloading it again. This application does not istall, it just gives you the .exe for the program to run. If that doesn't work, then we will have to take another approach. Let me know. ;)

Alright, I downloaded it a second time from a different site and it still does the same thing. I unzip it, copy and paste it to the 'Media Player Classic' folder in program files, send the old version 6.4.5.8 to the recycle bin, and try to run it, and it still sits there. The version 6.4.5.8 that I have came with the installer for real alternative and it installed along with that so it could play realplayer files, so that's how I have the previous version on my computer now.

Did you delete the old one first? If not, that might make a difference. I would suggest looking for any and all evidence or references to it, even in the registry, and get rid of them first. (If you are comfortable doing that) THEN install the new one. See if that helps. I have never had any problems updating MPC, although I have never got one with an "installer." I just remove the old one, unzip the new one to my desktop, then move it's folder into the C:\Program Files folder. Then I open up the folder, right click on the .exe, and send a shortcut to my desktop, and then I move the shortcut to my "Quick Launch," and delete the desktop shortcut. The version I am using is 6462, which is the newest, and it works same as always. I am attaching a screenshot.

Yes I deleted the old one, in fact since it came with real alternative, I decided to uninstall real alternative to see if that would do anything. So it gave an option to uninstall the old version of Media player classic, so I uninstalled it completely too. Then I downloaded the new Media player by itself again and it still won't work. I don't know why it won't work, but I think I'll just use version 6.4.5.8 or maybe something else instead of going into the registry and possibly messing all of Windows up to where I have to FDISK it (again:D ) Thanks for the help anyway though Roadblock, I appreciate it.

Hey Roadblock, I fixed it! I got on CDFreaks this morning and they had a news article for another new version (6.4.6.3) and they had two download links, one for Windows 98 and ME, and another one for 2000 and XP. So I downloaded for 98 and ME and this one works. I didn't know about there being two different versions, but I guess I had downloaded the wrong version before or something.

Cool! I posted the new version here earlier this morning, I was hoping you would see it. I didn't know about 2 different versions either. Oh well, you got it fixed, that is what is important. ;)

Yeah I saw your post here at UTC after I saw the one on CDFreaks. If you go to the link you put in your post, it shows on the right-hand column of the page that the download is for Windows NT, 2000, and XP. Fileforum.com doesn't have the one for Win9x because I even searched for Media Player Classic on their site and it came up for only the one you had linked to. The download I got was from another site, and I actually downloaded both to see what the difference was. The file for Win9x is 875 Kilobytes and the one for Windows NT\2000\XP is slightly smaller at 873 Kilobytes.
I'm probably the only doofus here that got affected by there being two versions, because I guarantee I'm the only one still using Win98.

(lol) Not necessarily. Thanks for bringing this to light, there may be others who will have this problem, and now we know what to do. ;)

Is it a stand-alone thing then? 'Cause when I first saw the thread I was thinking:
*Start > Run > mplayer2.exe > OK*

Well, as we discussed earlier, the version I posted from Beta News, doesn't come with an installer. It just gives you the .exe. And, as Shades found out, there are at least 2 versions, 1 for XP/2000, and another for ME/98......
So, if you get the right version for your OS, then all you need is the .exe for it to work. ;)
