KCeasy Forced to Drop FastTrack (Kazaa) Support

    Source: Slyck

One would think in these troubled times that Sharman Networks would accept all the help it can get. After vanquishing virtually all resources of Kazaa Lite via the DMCA, Sharman has now targeted KCeasy.

KCeasy is a front end client that uses the giFT daemon to access FastTrack, OpenFT and Gnutella. Unlike other clients that use older giFT daemons to simply leech and contribute nothing to the P2P community, KCeasy had all the functionality of an authorized FastTrack client. However, KCeasy does not have any of the third party support (AltNet) that Kazaa Media Desktop has, thereby representing a threat to Sharman.

Because of this, Sharman has decided to take another valued client away from the P2P community. Although this time around, the damage is not so great as FastTrack's importance is waning as more people discover alternative file-sharing methods. In addition, KCeasy has already established a small but impressive community, which in all likelihood will not be too distraught considering OpenFT and Gnutella support are still operational. Thanks to HouseCrowd for bringing us this story.

    From the Kceasy website:

    KCeasy 0.12 released [2004-04-17]
Please note that from this version on KCeasy will no longer include the plugin necessary to connect to the FastTrack network. On April 14 I received a Cease and Desist Letter from Sharman Networks demanding the immediate stop of KCeasy distribution. While it is perfectly legal under German law to create an interoperable client for FastTrack network via reverse engineering I feel that inclusion of FastTrack access with KCeasy is not worth a legal battle between Sharman and myself. KCeasy is a valuable file sharing client even without FastTrack connectivity and I will continue to develop it as such.

This sucks. Just when I find a good alternative to Kazaa lite, Sharman pulls this bullshit.

Does Trusty files upload to fasttrack?

Well I think You should both beware trustyfiles for two reasons.

    1. It has been discussed a few times that they are using come GnucDNA and gIft(i think..it might be like MLdonkey or something) an dare violating the GPL...

    2. Their program connects to a cydoor advertiser...very untrustworthy.

Also you can update KCeasy and it will not overwrite the fasttrack plugin or anything. It just has new icons if I remember...still works

My concern is whether or not KCeasy will continue to update the nodes and banlists for fasttrack if it's not going to connect to it. That would eventually make the clien unusable for fasttrack if you didn't have a current supernode list.

Perhaps someone can bring out a clean Trusty files?

heh, again I wouldn't trust trustyfiles (not meant to sound like a smartass)

You don't have to worry about the cydoor thing. Its only for a banner. I don't believe anything but cookies would make it on your computer. If you have your hosts list updated it would be blocked anyways,

    I just can't trust them.

Well trusty files only use banners for advertisement.. which i cannot see because of the Ad Blocking Hosts File..
Adaware didnt detect anything after install...

Maybe someone from UTC should carry out an Interview with the creator ..
    In their Forums ...

Well over st slyck, you'll have to search to find it, there was a pretty in-depth thread about this and a few people who contacted trusty files about the ads.cydoor.com and GnucDNA and GiFT GPL they were vilating. You can contact a guy named ashton, he could explain it best out of them all I think

Well, I just opened up KCEasy and tried to update my nodes, and it looks like they took off the Fasttrack update for both the supernodes and banlist.

So, this client will be useless for FT in a few weeks.
