Hundreds of Thousands Caught by Fake eMule Servers

    By Joseph Farthing
    http://www.methlabs.org

An attempt by the media industry to strike back at peer-to-peer users was revealed both to Methlabs and eMule users earlier today, as the tracking group MediaCentry set up several fake eMule servers to try to catch file sharers. MediaCentry is a company affiliated with both the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), and have been responsible for the tracking of a number of peer-to-peer users over the last year.

The servers, which were all hosted in the United States of America, were listed in a number of commonly used eMule server lists. Although it is not clear how the servers managed to slip past administrators, it is apparent that around 98000 people were using just one server before the problem was spotted.

The servers have been removed from many lists already, http://www.gruk.org/list.php and http://ed2k.2x4u.de/list.html are currently proven safe.

If you wish to update your firewall/PeerGuardian databases, you can add the following IP addresses which are confirmed as the fake servers:
    Code:
    66.192.117.38
    66.192.117.37
    209.61.190.154
    66.192.117.44
    199.218.8.201
    66.192.117.39
    66.192.117.36
    209.61.191.41
    66.192.117.34
    38.119.67.93
    66.192.117.43
    66.192.117.41
    38.119.105.66
    66.192.117.40
    209.61.191.17
    66.192.117.42

I have to wonder just what the legality of it all would come down to if the industry openly admitted that it got the evidence against someone sharing copyrighted material from their "fake" ed2k server logs.

The past has taught us that in the case of a US central server, the operators of the server(s) are to blame.

This is all the more reason for people who are issued warnings and god knows what else to find out EXACTLY where and what they were doing for the industry to serve them such nonsense.

I agree with what you say. Evidently it seems like a big joke if you ask me. People can claim that it wasnt them, or they were requesting something else. You know with fake files and stuff.

That is why hashes are important.

Since ED2K network is now the largest P2P network, You can bet the anti-p2p forces will be targetting it a lot more from now on. Since most eDonkey/eMule users hide their shared file list from other users, the only way for the RIAA/MPAA investigators to get a person's shared file list is to set up a "boobie-trap" server - which will reveal everyone's shared file list regardless of whether they are "showing" it or not.

The best defense against this mode of attack is to only connect to trusted servers such as Razorback.

Or perhaps this a wakeup call for people that there really is a need for an anonymous secure p2p app.
And I don't mean CalebStation7 or any similar type.

Hey now, have you ever heard of anyone getting caught using CS7? I think not.
