Mass distribution of software like that should never be done unless the distributor is ready to undertake the support responsibilities. Most of them don't, and try to just slough the responsibility off on the manufacturer.
Don't use the stuff the university provides. Unsupported software is worse than useless.
That said, you must have a firewall - connecting to the internet without a firewall is insanity. If you've already done that, you need to stop and disinfect your system thoroughly because you're probably already compromised.
As for a firewall, there's a perfectly adequate one that comes with Windows and is active by default. (I assume you're using Windows or you would have mentioned this critical detail.) Just use that firewall, it's all you need. Resist the people telling you that you need another, especially to watch outgoing traffic. You don't know enough to monitor outgoing traffic properly (most people don't), and you probably don't want to learn. So just stay with the Windows firewall.
There are a number of free antivirus products out there. Many of the paid products are badly behaved, and the freeware is a good deal better, despite being free. Payware to avoid because of reported conflicts include Norton and McAfee, which were both highly thought of long ago. Find a free one for yourself. Try several, nothing obliges you to commit to any one of them. Make sure that installation and updates go smoothly, preferably in the background.
