    BitComet is slower than BitTornado

I thought I'd try BitComet yesterday, since its written in C++ and therefore should use less resources as well as being more efficient.

However, after leaving it open with a well seeded / peer'd torrent overnight, the average download was 17k and upload was 42 (the max I'd allowed).

This is on a 2mb connection.

I switched to bittorando again this morning and immediately its at 50k down.

I'm a seasoned BT user but something strikes me as being a bit suspect there.

I've read all the threads on "my speed is slow, what can I do to fix it" but nothing seems to help.

If you can 'fix' the speed problem (assuming that something really is wrong) I think its a very good client.

Well i have the opposite effect. Bittornado is way slow for me compare to Bitcomet. And i assume you set all the settings correct since you are seasoned BT user so maybe your system don't like Bitcomet like my system don't like Bittornado heh.

I don't want to bash other clients for being slow cause different people got different result in using them IMO that is.

    Let's try something here -
Take my configuration file: save as... from here (V0.56) or from here (V0.59/0.60) (and rename it to bitcomet.xml)

1* make sure BC is NOT running
2* Backup-copy your own Bitcomet.xml config file, rename this one to Bitcomet.xml and put it in your Bitcomet install directory.
3* In the preferences->task - just change the "default download path" to yours

    That's it!

Some other issues that can help your speed-
A* IF you are behind a router (in a LAN) - remember to forward the BC port (preferences->general->listen-port) to your local PC's IP. You can verify that it is REALLY open by running BC and checking this here - http://www.speedguide.net/networktools.php
B* IF you are using XP-SP2 - it is recommended to use the patch that increase that maximum allowed TCP connections/sec (default - is 10)
C* IF you are still using Win 98 - increase the maximum allowed TCP connections (default - is 100)

Note: Instructions for B/C can be found on http://www.speedguide.com

See if it makes a difference... and let us know...

Select a VERY new/popular/active file (=lots of seeds, > 300) to test it on...
    such as here -
    http://www.torrentspy.com/directory.asp ... 3&cat=Lost

BTW - you can adjust the upload limit to about 60-80% of your maximum.

ALSO - here is a good torrents' search site - http://www.orbdesign.net/bt

    Hi Rafi,

Just a note that I too experienced the same results with Bit Tornado vs BitComet. That is until I downloaded your xml file. The only comparable differences between your settings and my originals are:

    1. You had max connections at 100 where I always kept mine at 60 ( no matter what client I used) because a lot of clients (actually windows xp) likes to lock up with with too many connections.

    2. You have your max upload speed at 5 kBs per torrent. I had mine set at 21 KBs. I have a 3Mbs/256Kbs Cable connection, so my max available upload speed would be 32 KBs (notice the large and small B's). So as a rule of thumb you set your max upload speed at approx 80%-85% of available bandwidth.

    3. You allowed 3 simultaneous downloads. Where I only allowed 1

Ok with all that said, 'your' settings gave me a dramatic speed increase on the downloads. And for the life of me, I can't figure out why!

First of all - I'm glad it help you out ! who cares why....
I have 5KBs - global upload limit (not per torrent!), since my ADSL has a very limited one (64Kbs ... )
Also - I suggest you test your 256Kb - see if it is really so....
I also played a bit with the disk cache...

BTW - how much is "dramatic" ?

Not bad! this is also what I have in average ...

So try 200 instead of 100 per task. maybe it will reach 120KB ...
Also - I have (in my Win9 a limit of 300 max TCP connections, so 3X 100 is actually a bit on the high side. I am trying not to do more then 2 concurrent downloads ...

By the way. Not sure if it's important. But I am running the 1201 build of Comet and my system specs are as follows.

    AMD XP Athon 2100
    640 Meg Ram
    WinXP SP1

And I run Outertech's CachmanXP 1.1.0.0 as my mem and disk cache optimizer. I also import Peer Guardians IP block list for protection. ZoneAlarm Pro 5.5.062.004 for firewall and Nod32 (lastest build) for antivirus.

there is no *tweak*. only settings of the preferences. you can replace with my config file, and see the preferences for yourself...

    wow!

I've played around with alot of bittorrent client to find the one
    best for my tastes.

Azureus: nice, but uses java and hogs cpu/mem(gave me the best download speeds)
Abc: good program but doesn't look like it has been updated in a bit

I tried bitcomet and liked it but my downloads were slow until..
your settings increased my dl speed majorly. I used to get an average of 35kb/s and now I get about 110kb/s average

Thanks alot to the developers of bitcomet and thanks
    for the great settings.

    Kiba
