Special note for users with Linksys WRT54G/GL/GS routers, there are severe problems with them when running any P2P app (read for fix)
The default firmware for Linksys (and all replacement firmwares except for one) have a severe problem where they track old connections for FIVE days, which causes the router to hang when using P2P apps, or any software that generates a lot of connections. DHT only aggravates the situation because of the number of connections it generates.
Linksys has yet to address this issue, but there is a fix. If you use alternative firmware, you can put in a start-up script to fix this problem.
Read here for more info and to fix it: http://utorrent.com/faq.php#Special_not ... GS_routers
Only after you do this step will your other speed compliants with using BitComet or any other Bit Torrent or P2P be valid.

My router has been dropping connections....so we will see if this was contributing to the problem. However, my ISP has been known to do packet shaping from time to time.....so let's just hope this isn't the issue.
I am no longer giving out invites to ANY torrent sites. Please do not PM me.
But, I do write articles for an automotive blog.
does somebody have remote users after upgrading firware etc.?
Thanks
umm, i'm not extremely technical, so I don't really get what that means. however, when i download, bitcomet works for about 2 minutes and the the speed drops to 0. at the same time, as the speed starts dropping, all of my internet-related programs stop working. i do have a linksys wrt54g router, so does this have anything to do with it?
from the fix page:
The following note does NOT apply to WRT54G/GS v5s! Use the latest official firmware (1.00.9+) with those, they do not suffer from this problem.
Happy days I got a v5![]()
(Acctually went back to the store and requested a new one when I noticed that it wasn't v5 and since v5 firmware is GPL released by Linksys I wanted that one.. The store was most understanding even if we had to open the boxes to check the versions, since Linksys doesn't dispaly the version on the box itself)
Hi folks.... I can't say I've run into this problem ( i recently got a WRT54G...) - but I have found something curious since connecting my router...
I have followed all the port forwarding instructions properly, and when I physically connect my laptop directly to the router to DL something with a network cable, everything works fine: I generally get DL speeds of about 75 to 100kB/s and up - while perhaps not as fast as I'd like, it's usually enough to finish the tasks I normally do within a couple of hours...
however... when I move to a different part of the house, and connect to the router by means of my laptops' built in wireless connection, I find that although I can still connect and DL ok, I'm only seeing "Local" connections- no "remote" connections, and the DL speed remains below 50kB/s...
Anyone else run into something like this?
This would be the expected effect of not setting up a static IP on your laptop wireless connection. You're basically using two different NIC's, one for wired, one for wireless, which means that when you shift to wireless you've got a different IP address, and your port-forwarding rule doesn't apply to it.

i followed the instruction on the port forwardubg, making a static ip address and i get a good dl speed, but then the other computer that is hooked up to the router loses its internet connection, did i configure somethin wrong?
yes you did you need to set both pcs to a static ip address and then turn off DHCP server in the router i.eOriginally Posted by BCSmartass

don't use above, it's just an example
also some routers have a setting for how many ip addresses to use... if you only have 2 pcs then set this setting to 2 not 3 or higher.

Hi,
I have a WRT54GS v5.1 and it used to work perfectly with bitcomet. Yet, after formatting my PC I've been having the exact same problems as you described, even though it's not supposed to happen with v5.1...
After a couple of minutes all my internet applications stop working and I cannot access or ping the router anymore. The only way is to restart it. Same for my roommates... so it's definitely not coming from my computer.
Does anyone have a clue ?
Thanks
It'd be better to create a new topic with your question than to piggyback on a dead thread.Originally Posted by giodigio
